Simple DIY Advent Calendar

Whew! Is everyone recovered from Thanksgiving? We are moving into full-on Holiday mode here at the Fence and we are excited to be sharing with you some great projects this week to get the season started!

Before we get to today’s post we want to let you know that you can find out how to make this darling Cinnamon Stick Ornament by checking out Vanessa’s post over at FOLK today.

Now, we are thrilled to have our Guest Contributor Julie here today sharing this adorable Advent Calendar she made for her kids.

Take it away Julie!

Hi At the Picket Fence readers! I’m so thrilled to be meeting you here again to show you this simple craft perfect for helping your family count down the days until Christmas and remember the reason we celebrate!

Now, I have to admit, chocolate advent calendars have never worked for me.

I was the kid who ate the chocolate from windows 1-25 on December 1st and suffered a very anticlimactic countdown for the rest of the month.

I’m fairly certain 2 out of our 3 kids have inherited my lack of self control, so with advent quickly approaching, I’ve been contemplating more meaningful ways to countdown to Christmas.

One of our favorite songs right now is “Promises” by Sanctus Real and I was inspired by the lyrics to use the promises of God as our theme for this year’s advent.

Taking a cue from the various envelope advents being featured this year I created a simple calendar using paper supplies from around the house.

The envelopes are attached to foam board and glittered numbers cut from cardstock mark each day.

And the seals for each envelope are simple strips of washi tape.

I love the abundant interpretations of advent calendars this season and the endless creativity for filling the days of those calendars.

Whether chocolates, trinkets, family activities or promises there is no greater excitement than discovering the treasure in each day’s packaging.  In the midst of a busy season, may you discover the treasure of each day as you count down to Christmas.

Thanks so much for joining me at the Fence today,

We have lots more fun coming up this week so be sure to come back Wednesday and join us as we Trim Our Trees together with these other fabulous bloggers! See you then!

Thank you for sharing the very cute Advent projects. I like the calendar idea. Many years ago we had one for our kids that I made out of felt and each pocket held scripture telling the story of Christ’s birth. The promises idea is wonderful. Joyous Wishes, Linda

What a great Advent calendar idea. My kids still use the one my friend gave them years ago. It’s one of their favorite things to take out. It’s exciting to count down to Christmas.
