Favorite holiday recipe collection from atthepicketfence.com

Does anyone else find themselves feeling so smug as you get everything checked off your grocery list for upcoming holiday meals only to get home and realize that while you may have the ingredients for a grand meal in a few days, somehow you've managed to make it home from the store without putting anything in your cart for the dinners you are expected to prepare leading up to that day! … [Read more...]

Our Family Christmas Tree

Christmas tree with family ornaments atthepicketfence.com

Has anyone else looked at photos of beautiful Christmas trees in magazines or on Pinterest and wondered.. "Where on earth are all of the 'real' ornaments?" You know the ones I'm talking about, right? The paper angels, the picture frames made out of popsicle sticks and the cotton ball snowmen? I always wonder if they are frantically removed before the photo is taken or if they are hanging on the branches of the Christmas tree that gets relegated to the deep recesses of the house like … [Read more...]

Photo Box Tree Topper & Giveaway!

DIY photo box tree topper from atthepicketfence.com

I have a confession...I'm one of those people who will quite happily sit and watch those infomercials featuring the 'Soft Rock Hits of the 60's and 70's'. I am a total sucker for The Carpenters and Barry Manilow, John Denver and even a little Captain and Tennille thrown in for good measure. But, there is one song, one particular song, that will completely undo me each time. As in, turn me into a blubbery, weepy mess. … [Read more...]

Original Fantasy Fudge Recipe … a sweet treat!

the original fantasy fudge

There are a million fudge recipes out there but I love the  original Fantasy Fudge recipe. This is the recipe that calls for marshmallow creme. Yep marshmallow creme. You know that ooey gooey stuff you get in the little jar. Kraft has a fantasy fudge recipe on the back of their Jet Puff jar. Don't use that one. It's a newfangled one. It's not near as good as the original fantasy fudge recipe with marshmallow creme. Why do manufacturers insist on screwing with the original recipes? Just leave … [Read more...]

Scripture Wrapped Advent Candles

DIY scripture advent candles from atthepicketfence.com

"At this Christmas when Christ comes, will He find a warm heart? Mark the season of advent by loving and serving others with God's own love and concern." Mother Teresa Growing up,  we never had advent calendars filled with chocolates and prizes. The only countdown we had were these darling paper houses from Hallmark where each door and window opened to reveal a meaningful word about the season. The celebration of Advent in our house was reserved for simple white candles tucked into a tabletop … [Read more...]

Christmas in the Kitchen

Christmas brunch or breakfast tablescape

"For it is good to be children sometimes, and never better than at Christmas, when it's mighty Founder was a child Himself."  ~ Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol This past weekend was one of those weekends that you remember for years to come. Not because anything especially spectacular happened. In fact, it felt so incredibly ordinary. And yet there was also something extraordinary about it. What would seem like a lot of 'nothing' to some, felt like a whole lot of 'something' to us. … [Read more...]

DIY Gratitude Tree

Gratitude or Thanksgiving Tree from atthepicketfence.com

One morning, while upstairs putting on my makeup, I had the news on in the background and, as always, had my ears tuned to the weather segment. It was finally time for Mr. Al Roker to have his turn and he weaved his weather magic and soon I knew just what the temps would be all over the country. But when it came time to talk about the west coast, specifically my beautiful Pacific NW, he just kind of casually waved his arm and said, "And there will be rain in the Pacific NW." I stopped dead in … [Read more...]

A Few of My Favorite Things

unique and creative Christmas gift ideas from atthepicketfence.com

It was time. The children had finally reached an age where I was certain that they were ready to sit down and watch one of the greatest movies of all-time. The fake logs glowed in the fireplace, the lights twinkled on the Christmas tree and the smell of popcorn floated in the air. And as Julie Andrews spun around in circles on the top of a hill, apron flying in the wind and I sat there surrounded by my precious babes, I was quite certain that there was nothing that could top this moment. I … [Read more...]
