You have no idea how badly I wanted to give this blog post a different title. In my mind, it really should be called, “Stick a bunch of seashells in bowls around your house and call it good!”. But, I was afraid that it didn’t sound quite blog-title-ish enough. So I went for the more ‘professional’ route instead and today I’m going to be sharing with you some of the most easy-peasy ways to add summer style to your home.
I have come to the conclusion that these days I can manage to muster about 10, maybe 15, minutes worth of time and energy that I’m willing to dedicate to decorating. Which means that I pulled off a simple, coastal inspired summer mantel in the time between tossing in a load of laundry and being summoned to observe my daughter’s latest trick on the trampoline.
I feel like I need to state for the record that I set this nautical themed table in less than 10 minutes. In fact, I think it was actually in about 8.5 minutes. Why am I telling you this? Well because, in my opinion, summer is synonymous with simplicity. But simplicity doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice style. (Is it just me or were there a lot of ‘s’ words in those last two sentences?)
I don’t know about you but for us, summer is the season of spur-of-the-moment get togethers and everything is just more casual. Flip flops and the smell of skin covered in sunscreen, kids running around while grown-ups linger a little bit longer over a glass of wine or a cocktail.
Happy Saturday friends! I’m so excited to bring this old post back to life and show you how I turned a broken fountain into a fantastic tiered planter.
You know those pictures that look one way when you are standing further back but as you get closer you see that the image is really completely different?
Like where you think you’re looking at a painting of a beautiful lake but when you get closer you realize that it’s a giant elephant….or something like that. 😉
You know what I’m talking about right? The ol’ trick of the eye!
Well, there’s something in my backyard that’s playing tricks on everyone!
Have you ever watched honey drip from a spoon? How it starts out slow and steady. And, at first, you think that it is just one solid color but as it catches the light you suddenly notice all of the different tones, the different layers.
Have you noticed how it lands in a little honey puddle? How you have to have patience as you blend it in. It won’t be rushed. But then, well then, it’s subtle sweetness just works its way right through.
I have a bit of a ritual when it comes to receiving the latest issues of my favorite catalogs or magazines.
I never look at them right away. Oh sure, I might allow myself a quick glance through. But rarely does the mail come to our house at a time with things are calm and relaxed. Frankly, sometimes I wonder if those times are just urban legends. 😉
I want to savor that new catalog or magazine. I want to peruse it at my leisure.
Preferably without anyone asking me for a snack.
You know what? I don’t live in a farmhouse. Or a cottage. I live in a traditional style stucco house.
And I like it. Really I do. Actually, I like it a WHOLE lot and I’m incredibly, incredibly grateful for it. But, lately, I’ve noticed that you never really see my kind of house on Instagram or Pinterest or Facebook or…anywhere, really.
And sometimes that makes me feel a bit left out. Just a bit.
Oh friends. When I think about how I used to over-complicate seasonal decorating I feel shameful.
I mean, seriously, the LAST thing decorating should be is complicated. I know I’ve talked about it before here but I think it’s worth revisiting.
Decorating is merely a creative extension of our personalities. It’s a physical manifestation of our likes, dislikes and way of living.
I love a good makeover.
The kind where the plain girl who’s been quietly going through life half hoping no one ever notices her and half hoping that someday it will be HER day to be transformed and swept off her feet by the handsome football player, or maybe Prince Charming himself!
Summer in our minds is synonymous with simplicity. It’s relaxed and casual and somehow on a warm day when there is a breeze blowing through your hair, your only worry ends up being about what you are going to toss on the grill for dinner.
It’s flip-flops and swimming pools. Farmers markets and berries. Hammocks and cocktails…although you might not want to try and drink a cocktail while lounging in a hammock…just trust us on that one! 😉
