10 reasons why women should blog

Web Log, Blog, Blogging, Blogger…A foreign language to some.  A hobby to many.  A profession for a few. A passion for those who do.  What does it mean to be “a blogger”? and why would someone want to “blog”?

I jumped into blogging without really understanding what it was all about, what it could do for me, what it would do to me and what it’s potential could be.  So, I am going to spend a little time over the next few  week’s providing some insight into the often murky waters of blogging.

Each week I’ll share 10 things as a woman that I have learned along this blogging journey.

You men out there…are there any?…are of course welcome to glean from this as well,  but some will be specific to women bloggers because well…I am one.

So we’ll call it Blogging 101 (for women).

Part One-10 Reasons Why Women Should Blog

1-Blogging can be a creative outlet.  There is nothing more rewarding then putting your thoughts, words, recipes, photography, remodels, home improvements, crafts, etc. etc. in a permanent place.  It is like a virtual scrapbook where you can chronicle your dreams, aspirations, ideas and deepest thoughts and prayers to share with others and to go back and revisit.

2-Blogging is a way to keep current with technology.  Technology can be scary but it should never be feared.  I believe that if Christ’s 12 disciples were with us today they would have been bloggers!  Actually His disciples are with us today and many our bloggers..spreading the gospel through the internet.  Never fear modern technology.  Learn to use it to spread your message!  Learn to harness the internet.  I love to read about women learning .html and CSS coding.  I love seeing them feel triumphant when they create a header or a button or learn to change the font on their blog.

3-Blogging can be accountability.  Whenever I think about starting a new project my first thought is,  “I need to announce that on my blog!”  I know that if I do, I will feel accountable to my readers to complete what I started.  When I remodeled my bathroom this past summer..much of my motivation was the excitement of getting to share the results with my blogger friends.  How often have you seen the fruitful results of someone’s weight loss journey, or their writing aspirations culminate in a new book!  Often they were encouraged to follow through with their goals and dreams because of feeling accountable to their readers.

4-Blogging can be therapeutic.  People spend a lot of money on therapy .  Blogging can be a form of therapy and for the most part it’s free.  We can spill our heart out onto the screen.  We can find encouragement; advise, thoughtful correction, insightful feedback.  There is a sense of vulnerability and empowerment interwoven together when we put ourselves out there on our blogs.  I have received some of the strongest affirmation in my life through my online relationships.

5-Blogging can be a road to other opportunities.  I know of many women who have moved into exciting career opportunities, speaking engagements, book deals and “dream opportunities” because of their blogs.  Their talents were recognized through their blogging.

6-Blogging makes the world a smaller place.  I find one of the most exciting things about blogging is all of the different people I have met from all over the world!  Individuals whom I never would have been introduced to in real life.  Bloggers living in other countries, chef’s who work in some of the finest restaurants, TV personalities who are often so good about following and connecting with everyday bloggers, and my favorite bloggers to know ..other women out there who are just like me chronicling their lives and trying to put their stamp on the world.  Blogging makes this big wide world so much more intimate.
7- Blogging provides inspiration.  I am never more inspired as when I am reading the posts of my fellow bloggers. Never!  There is no magazine, printed article or devotional, or HGTV/Food Network television series that inspires me like you do!  The creativity, the strength, the perseverance, the intelligence, the humility, the ingenuity, the frugality of my fellow bloggers is unbelievable!  I could spend all day gleaning ideas from reading your blogs.  I would blog just to be a part of this.

8-Blogging can give you a voice.  How often have you thought.  No one “hears me”.  No one “listens to me.”  Blogging is a wonderful way to give voice to your thoughts, ideas and passions.  It can be a platform for a cause you care deeply about.  A way to rally others.  It can connect you with like-minded people who truly are interested in what you have to say.  Many women bloggers who we in the blogging community have deemed “successful” have used that success to motivate others to support a cause or a mission.  Cancer, Poverty, Hunger, Orphan Care, Sharing the Gospel…just to name a few.  Blogging gave voice to the causes and concerns that were near to their heart.  Blogging can give YOU a voice when often as women and especially moms we feel no one is really listening to us.

9- Blogging can become a business.  Now this was one I hesitated to list, but I can’t leave it out.  It is possible for blogging to generate a little revenue.  It should NEVER be the sole purpose of blogging , but at some point it might provide a small income for a stay at home mom who might otherwise not have an opportunity to generate a paycheck.  Some have made a nice living off of blogging, others have no desire at all to get paid to blog, others would love to receive a small amount for the time they put into producing quality material.  None of this is wrong, just don’t let it be your primary motivation to blog.

10-Blogging provides community!  read the greatest tweet the other day, I wish I could remember who said it.  If it was you…let me know!

She stated, “It doesn’t matter how many followers you have if you don’t have community with them!”

That really stuck with me.  I love blogging because of the community I feel here.  We are all so far flung these days from our families.  Many of us move often, leaving behind friends and loved ones.  My blogging community goes with me wherever I am.  I can be sitting in the doctors office, or grocery shopping, or in the bathtub..yes I said that, or in the dark feeling alone on my journey and can reach out online..thank you iphone…and feel community!  If you begin the journey of blogging…find a community, no matter how large or small and connect.  It is what moves blogging beyond words on a computer screen and into a relationship.

If you decide to take the plunge and start blogging or if you are a brand new blogger I highly recommend you pay a visit to Debbie over at Debbiedoos Blogging and Babbling.  She hosts a party each week for new bloggers where they can link up their blog and meet other new bloggers! So those are my top 10 reasons why women should blog.  What were the reasons you started blogging?  What made you become a blogger?  Or, if you’re thinking about starting a blog are there any questions you have that we can answer? Share them with me here OR even better meet me over by the fence at our At The Picket Fence Community where we can talk about the “whys” of blogging!

Hope to see you next week At The Picket Fence where we’ll talk about 10 things I wish I’d know when I started blogging…

Don’t forget we have a CSN giveaway going on until Thursday!

I especially love the ‘making the world smaller’ point. I completely agree with you and it’s one of the reasons I most love blogging.

I love knowing there are women like me all oer the world.

    Hello Vanessa & Heather,
So true. I have seen blogs with thousands of followers and very few comments on each posting. This tells me they grew their blog too quickly or the wrong way. Blog communities are the best. Great post! Thank you for sharing it.

    Warmly, ~Melissa 🙂

Hey Heather…thank you for this post. If it’s OK with you I would like to link it to my “Advice for New Bloggers” page.
I started my blog without knowing what I was getting into. As I slowly found out how big it could be I tried not to panic. Thankfully, when my blog was very new, I found 2 blogger friends who were so helpful and patient. Without them I’m not sure I would have stuck to it…and in the end the reason I did stick to it was because I had found this community of people who were like me. They had the same interests, the same values, the same love of their families. And a few actually share my obsession with pillows!
I can’t wait to read your next post about what you wish you knew…I bet we all can relate.

    Heather,
This was an excellent post that reminded me of why I love to blog.
I also needed the encouragement… sometimes I feel burned out, other times I feel like I have to go and type a post RIGHT NOW or I’ll burst.
But mostly, I love to blog because of the other ladies (and a few men) who I learn from and get encouraged and blessed by.
You and Vanessa being two of those encouragers and blessings to me 🙂
I related to your #3-Accountability! I am starting a Purge Party next Monday because I so need to free my home and heart from “stuff” and I thought how fun and encouraging it might be for other ladies to know that their efforts are noticed, too!
SO, you have a wonderful day, making your home and blogging!
    HUGS!

Heather, this is really a great post. I had some of those very reasons as incentive for blogging and others were byproducts that I didn’t expect, like the community.

I started mine because I wanted an outlet for my mouth. Sounds crazy, but I thought if I had a place to share my random thoughts, I would be less of a chatterbox.

It didn’t work, really. I think I’m as talkative as ever. However, my husband is a huge supporter of it because he thinks the outlet for creativity has been good for me.

And he would know. He’s the one who has to live with me!

I’m looking forward to your other posts on the subject.

Ladies, what a wonderful post! I love love love it. The blogging community is such a wonderful place. When I started blogging I thought it was just going to be for my family and a journal for my daughters. I love the thought of my daughters being grown up and if they want one of mom’s recipes it’s just a click away. I adore the friendships and connections. It drives me and I believe it makes me a better person. Oh yeah, blogging has made my grocery bill…double. HAHA. Have a wonderful evening!! = )))

What a great post. Each and every reason is so true. I had no idea just how amazing blogging would be and how many needs of mine it would meet (needs I didn’t even realize I had). I didn’t even know what a blog was two months before I started my blog. Now it is such an important part of my life. The best part is the community…they are truly a special bunch of people.

Heather- What a great post…and so many truths in it. I am one of those bloggers that stick my head in the sand and have decided NOT to do it for money…or to post a bunch of give-aways just to get followers. I have had 3 offers now from “sponsors” but haven’t accepted them…that is not what blogging is about for me. It is for the connection I get to other lives…and a recorded history for my grandkids.

    Great post!!!! xxoo Diana

I've been watching our cherry trees bloom for 12 y I've been watching our cherry trees bloom for 12 years now and every year I ohhhh and ahhhh over the blossoms like it's the first time I've ever seen them. I gush and I take photos (that look exactly like the ones I took the year before and the year before that) and I make my family come outside and look at them with me which you know they just LOVE to do. 😉 I think that is one of the main reasons why I love spring so much. On the one hand, it's predictable and yet, on the other hand, it still feels like such a surprise after the long months of barren branches.

And yesterday, as I was staring at the gorgeous blossoms for the umpteenth time, I couldn't help but think that I hope this is how I feel when our lives return to some semblance of normalcy.

I hope that the predictable feels special and that the typical feels anything but. I hope that I ohhh and ahhh over the simple things I've realized I've taken for granted. And, most of all, I hope that feeling doesn't go away for a very, very long time! 💗
Are you living with great expectation friends? Bec Are you living with great expectation friends? Because He is risen!

Happy Easter from my home to yours!
Lemon bars all ready for tomorrow! It’s going to Lemon bars all ready for tomorrow! It’s going to be a different kind of Easter for sure but some things don’t change. Have you been baking and getting ready for tomorrow? What’s one thing on your menu that you have to have every year?
If this is Good Friday, why doesn’t it feel so “good”? It all seems backward doesn’t it?

What could be good about the unspeakable pain he suffered? What could be good about the shame and betrayal?

Easter Sunday is so joyful, bright and cheery. Shouldn’t that be the day we call “good”? It just feels so much better!

But, I don’t know how to rejoice over His resurrection, unless I have felt the pain of His death. I have realized that in life the sweetest victories are the ones which were realized after a pain-filled journey.

And, so it is with Good Friday. I know there will be victory over death, but I can’t skip ahead in the story.

Jesus knew what was coming. He knew what he would experience. And he knew why he would go through it. He did it for me. He did it for you.

Do you know that? Have you felt it down in the very core of your soul?
Sometimes it makes me squirm a bit. Why would anyone do that for me?

Well, because, I can’t do it for myself!

There is nothing I can do to earn that kind of love and mercy.

That is why it is called GRACE.

His grace is freely given. We don’t have to pay for it. He paid the price for us already.

Do you remember that movie from years ago called “Ransom”? A couple’s young son was kidnapped and the parents went to hell and back trying to find him and pay the “ransom” demanded by the kidnappers.

Well, Jesus is our “ransom”. (1 Timothy 2:6) His life was the payment.

Why is it called “Good Friday”? Because that wasn’t the end of the story….
.
…It was just the beginning!
Raise your hand if there’s a table in your house Raise your hand if there’s a table in your house that’s become the landing zone for ALL THE THINGS! 🙋🏻‍♀️🤪 I’ve never been more thankful for our rarely used dining room table as it’s become command central for school books and laptops and games.

Where are things collecting in your house right now?
“Sighing, tears, frustration, anger.” Every si “Sighing, tears, frustration, anger.” Every single one of these emotions has made their way through our home in recent days and, my guess is, they have in your home too.

I SO needed this reminder today from the new book ‘Adore’ by @sarahagertywrites.

Adoration isn’t just sitting at His feet gazing longingly with stars in my eyes. It’s bringing my fears and my sorrows and gray roots in my hair that desperately needs to be colored and my messy house and all of the things that threaten to send me over the edge right now and laying them down before Him, soaking up His word and His presence so that when I stand back up, I am changed for having spent the time adoring the ONE who is... Healer, comforter, peace-giver, deliverer, redeemer.

What do you need to bring to Him today? I’ll share mine in the comments and I’d love to hear from you too!
I’ve always loved evenings, but since this whole I’ve always loved evenings, but since this whole lockdown thing began, I’ve come to appreciate this time of day even more.

It feels the most...normal. Daytime is strange and foreign right now. My husband has taken over our home office, I’m suddenly taking over the responsibility of managing my kids’ distance learning and let me just say that teaching 7th grade algebra to my daughter is hugely ironic since I struggled with math all the way through school. I’m trying to do my own work but it feels utterly futile with the constant interruptions which take precedence right now. In the daytime, I’m constantly reminded of how upside down life feels.

But, in the evening, I cook dinner like I’ve always done and we gather around the table like we’ve always done and we laugh and tell stories and then clean up and play games or go on a walk or watch a show. And that feels SO gloriously normal.

So now I love evenings even more than I ever did before and I’m so grateful for this little chunk of time where the rhythms we established years ago are helping to sustain us now when so much of life feels outside of our control.

What feels ‘normal’ to you right now? Whatever it is, keep doing it. 🌿
When I was in college I would frequently call home When I was in college I would frequently call home and pour my heart out to my mom, sharing with her all that was happening in my life in that completely unfiltered way that you can talk with the person who potty trained you. These phone calls usually took place at night and my mom would patiently listen as I vented frustrations about professors, roommates, boyfriends and the food in the cafeteria. And, inevitably, they would end with my mom saying, “Everything seems worse when you’re tired. Try not to overthink things or make any major decisions tonight, especially when you are feeling emotional.” Dear friends, may I pass along this advice to you today?

If you don’t absolutely HAVE to make a decision right now, I want to encourage you to wait until life gets back to normal. If you are finding yourself over-analyzing relationships and family dynamics, I want to encourage you to remember that everything seems more dramatic when looked at under a microscope. And, let’s face it, being homebound with our loved ones non-stop makes us all feel like lab rats in an experiment.

If you are tempted to quit a job, start a business, start homeschooling permanently, stop homeschooling permanently, move to a new city, buy a farm, quit pursuing your dream, join a commune or make any other major life decision just…wait. Because, if it is in fact the right decision, it will be made even clearer once our lives return to their ‘regularly scheduled programming’. Instead, in this strange season, let’s all just take a deep, collective breath and let it out slowly, releasing the anxiety that threatens to overtake us. Let’s help each other maintain some perspective and not slip into a posture of over-thinking every little thing in our lives. Let’s remember that the enemy of our souls would love nothing more than to use this time when things feel dark to manipulate us into thinking that aspects of our lives are worse than they actually are.

My prayer for you in these days is that you will have the clarity to know what is true and that you will be filled with peace even while we live in this season of so many unknowns.
Raise your hand if you’re doing more baking thes Raise your hand if you’re doing more baking these days! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m trying to avoid gaining the #corona15 but my daughter and I LOVE baking together and it does help to pass the time plus it counts as a science lesson right?

If you’re able to find flour in the stores (for the love people please stop overbuying!) and you’re doing more baking at your house too you need to add this apricot bread to your list of new recipes to try!

Normally I’d point you to my blog for the directions but I’m going to do you a solid and leave the full recipe in the comments.

What have you baked so far during this time of social distancing? I’d love some new ideas!
There are a LOT of people out walking in our neigh There are a LOT of people out walking in our neighborhood right now (but still social distancing!) and she decided that she wanted to bring them some joy and put a smile on their face when they pass by our house. Also, the square with ‘say no to coronavirus’ is priceless. 😂 I just love her so much!
