My Good Housekeeping Feature!

Good Housekeeping inspired 4th of July decor www.atthepicketfence.com

I’m in this month’s issue of Good Housekeeping!

It’s a teeny-tiny-don’t-blink-or-you-will-miss-it feature.

But it’s there!

And why am I in Good Housekeeping do you ask?

Well, I’ll tell ya.

I’m in Good Housekeeping because I took two Dollar Tree handkerchiefs, put a pillow between them and tied the corners with ribbons.

Then I took two terra-cotta pots and put red flowers in the bottom one, white flowers in the top one, stacked the white one on top of the red one and stuck two American flags in it.
Makes sense, right?

Ok, so maybe there was a little more involved in being featured in Good Housekeeping. Just a little though, mind you!

You see, I did this back in the summer of 2011. I had been visiting my parents and working my way through the stack of magazines my mom always saves for me. One of those magazines was Good Housekeeping. And it featured some fun and simple 4th of July decor. “Simple” is one of my most favorite words!

So, I created my own version of their version and took photos of it and put it on our blog.

Fast forward to March of this year and I get a call from my sister. “Where are you?” she hollers at me through the phone. “I’m on my way to pick up the kids from school”, I reply. “Well you are not going to believe the email that you just got!” she says.

Good Housekeeping had seen my version of their version and wondered if I would be willing to let them put it in the July issue of their magazine. Hmmmm…let me think about it…. 😉

I may or may not have neighbors who now think of me as the crazy lady who pulled her car over and made high-pitched screeching sounds while waving her hands around wildly.

After re-editing and actually re-shooting some of the photos then sending them off to them I waited and waited and waited and waited and waited for the July issue to come out.

When it finally did, I greedily snatched it up and flipped through the pages looking and looking and looking and looking and looking. I reached the end of the magazine and didn’t see it. So I started from the beginning and went flipped through all the pages again and still didn’t see it.

I did this 4 more times.

Until…I saw it.

But still…kinda cool, huh? 🙂

Just goes to show that you never know whose watching!

Very, very, VERY cool!! Congratulations, Vanessa! I love Good Housekeeping. I started reading my mom’s copies when I was 12, which means I’ve now been reading Good Housekeeping for nearly 38 years! And I still love it, because I get wonderful ideas that will actually work in a real home. I’d be really excited if I were you–small feature or not, it’s still a feature! Way to go, friend!

Vanessa – Congratulations! Your porch looks darling and very “Fourth of Julyish”. Great job. But then, everything you two do is great and a lot of your items should be published. Again, congratulations. I’ll save the issue and say – “that’s my friend”.

Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter through the narrow Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.”.
.
When I was a little girl we took a trip to Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson, MO. One of the attractions there is the Marvel Cave. The whole theme park was actually built right around the cave! I will never forget the feeling of descending into the darkness. We had to walk down a steep, narrow path and I could feel the rocky walls beginning to close in on me. From time to time, our guide would even have to call out for us to duck our heads so as not to whack them on rocks that were jutting out. And just when it felt like we had been walking forever; just when it felt the most narrow and the most dark; just when we were starting to get really weary from navigating this path, we turned the corner and found ourselves awestruck as we gazed at this enormous room. Everywhere we looked there were stalactites and stalagmites. Lights had been installed and they reflected off of these formations creating the most beautiful colors on the walls. There were pools of water in a shade of aquamarine I had never seen before and waterfalls flowing from upper levels. That long, winding, damp trek had been so very worth it. The descent into darkness had revealed light…and life!

My prayer for you friends, is that you will look at that narrow path with the small gate as an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to experience the kind of freedom that our souls are longing for. The wide and broad path of the world promises us a freedom that is fleeting and temporary. But at the end of the narrow path, there is hope and peace and life everlasting.

I’m choosing the narrow path. And in spite of the hardships, in spite of the challenges and the fears and the times that can feel as dark as the journey down into a cave, I wouldn’t trade a single minute of it.

When I started blogging, he was only 6 years old and some of you have been apart of my community here for that entire time. Now, he's 19 and there is a reason parents are told not to blink because the years truly do go faster than I ever could have imagined. He has become such an incredible young man we are so excited to see how God is going to unfold the next chapter of his life. We celebrated with parties galore (SO many open houses to attend!) and made memories we'll forever cherish. My mama heart was filled to bursting with the joy of it all! Now we're taking some time to just enjoy these warm, summer days making even more memories because, when you’re at this stage of parenting, you know all too well how much you need to grasp every opportunity to spend time together.

I hope your summer is off to a great start too dear friends! 🪴
