Christmas Home Tour

One of my most prized possessions is a Perry Como Christmas album. Yes, an actual vinyl album.

It belonged to my mom when she was a girl and, in my humble opinion, Christmas doesn’t officially begin until I hear the first strands of ‘No Place Like Home for the Holidays’. In fact, I literally can’t sing that song any other way than how Perry Como sings it and have found all other interpretations to be severely lacking.

When records gave way to CD’s, I made it my mission to find a copy of the Perry Como Christmas album for myself and for my mom too. That CD is now about as worn out as the vinyl album.

But, since time and technology continue to march on, I’ve recently discovered the joy of customizing playlists on Amazon Prime music and I decided that this year I would compile all of my favorite Christmas songs into one place.

Of course, the very first album I wanted to add was Perry Como’s and after a quick search I found it and added it to my playlist.

A few days later, we went to cut down our Christmas tree and that evening, as I began opening bins of ornaments, I brought my portable speaker into the living room and started my Christmas playlist.

But, I quickly realized that something was wrong. There were songs I had never heard before. Even Perry Como was singing words that were totally unfamiliar to me.

And if I hadn’t been up my eyeballs in lights and ornaments I probably would have stopped to figure out what Amazon Prime music had done with MY Perry Como Christmas album. Because, this one had some extra songs on it. Songs that didn’t even sound very Christmas-y!

But, instead, I kept it playing. And as I carefully unwrapped decades worth of ornaments, each one bringing back a different memory, I heard these words crooned to me and…well…they took my breath away.

And I wanted to share them with you today as I give you a little Christmas tour.

“You can tell when you open the door. You can tell if there’s love in a home.”

“Every table and chair seems to smile, do come in, come and stay for a while.”

“You almost feel you’ve been there once before.”

“By the shine and glow of the room!”

“And the clock seems to chime…”

“…Come again, anytime.”

“You’ll be welcome, wherever you roam.”

“You can tell when there’s love in a home.”

My eyes welled with tears as I let the words wash over me. There I sat surrounded by all of the trimmings for my tree and I was just stunned that such a simple, little song could so perfectly capture everything that I want my home to embody.

I don’t want people just to see the furniture or the decorations or the art on the walls.

I want all who walk through our door to see past all of that. I want people to be able to tell that there is love in this home.

It’s not perfect. Most definitely not! But, there is so much love here.

Love for those who sleep under this roof. Love for our neighbors and our community.

And, most of all, love for our Savior, Jesus Christ, who we celebrate and honor at Christmas.

Because it was out of God’s deep love for us that He sent His Son to this earth so that you and I could be reconciled to Him and know the most perfect love in existence.

My hope and prayer for you this Christmas is that your hearts will be overflowing with love and that it would pour out into your homes and then spill out your door into your neighborhoods and among friends and even strangers.

Let’s be people who live up to the words of that song that wasn’t supposed to be on my playlist but that I needed to hear so very much.

Merry Christmas dear friends!

P.S. ‘Love in a Home’ was originally featured in the Broadway play ‘Lil’ Abner’.

I am totally with you on Perry Como! That version is my favorite as well. What a sweet song! And what better love than that of Jesus Christ, who came to this earth to die for us. That is the truest love of all. Thank you for sharing.

Your home is lovely. We have a Perry Como album[yes it is a record] that we always play at Christmas. When he sings Ave Maria it is breath taking. Did you see the special on Perry Como a while back? It was on PBS. It will probably be repeated eventually. It was not a Christmas show. FYI Debby Boone is Perry Como’s God Daughter. Wishing you and yours a blessed Christmas and a Happy, healthy 2020.
    MERRY CHRISTMAS

Thank you for sharing your words and your beautiful home.

PS… My parents had one of those albums that featured all the greats of the day, Perry Como included. I used to listen to it over and over on my record player. ♥️♥️♥️

Happy Independence Day!! 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙 M Happy Independence Day!! 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙

May we never take for granted the freedom given to us not by earthly authorities but by the ONE true authority. And may we live in such a way as to honor those who fought for and protect freedom and liberty.

Happy Friday!! I’m working on a blog post to sha Happy Friday!! I’m working on a blog post to share all of the details of our family room shelving makeover but I’m super impatient and just had to give you all a sneak peek!! We are SO happy with how they turned out and it finally looks like I’ve always envisioned. Our quick fix years ago (scroll to see the before photo) never felt quite right but now? Soooo much better!! 🙌🏻 Big shoutout to our amazingly talented friend Matt @redemptive_woodworx for bringing our vision to life and doing such impeccable work.

I hope you all have a great start to the 4th of July weekend and make sure to check my stories later for Friday Funnies!
The month of June is coming to a close and it has The month of June is coming to a close and it has been JAM packed! The highlight by far though was my son's graduation from high school. When I started blogging, he was only 6 years old and some of you have been apart of my community here for that entire time. Now, he's 19 and there is a reason parents are told not to blink because the years truly do go faster than I ever could have imagined. He has become such an incredible young man we are so excited to see how God is going to unfold the next chapter of his life. We celebrated with parties galore (SO many open houses to attend!) and made memories we'll forever cherish. My mama heart was filled to bursting with the joy of it all! Now we're taking some time to just enjoy these warm, summer days making even more memories because, when you’re at this stage of parenting, you know all too well how much you need to grasp every opportunity to spend time together.

I hope your summer is off to a great start too dear friends! 🪴

Happy first day of summer dear friends!! I can’t believe it’s been so long since I posted something new here but life has been crazy. I’ll have some new photos of house projects and life events to share with you soon but, got now, I’m just going to enjoy this gorgeous first day of summer after our ridiculously long, wet spring. ☀️

This is one of my most favorite projects from my b This is one of my most favorite projects from my book Life in Season!

Because, if heaven has a fragrance, I’m fairly certain it smells like lilacs.

I think that somewhere along the way the verse in the Bible that said, ‘heaven will smell like lilacs’ just got lost in translation. But it HAD to have been in there at some point, right?

When I bury my head in the blossoms (which I absolutely MUST do every single time I walk past them), I immediately feel a stirring in my soul.

It seems like I wait forever for my lilac tree to bloom. Every year I anxiously watch as the buds begin to form on the branches and then when the blossoms finally burst forth I begin that agonizing process of deciding the absolute perfect moment to snip them and bring them inside.

And then, after all of that waiting and watching it’s just over…done. Because, unlike heaven, lilacs don’t last for an eternity. So, making my own lilac room spray seemed like the perfect way to enjoy their fragrance long after the blossoms have faded.

Here’s how to make it! Ingredients: Water, Vodka, Lilac fragrance oil. Directions: Fill spray bottle with 50/50 ratio of water to vodka. Add 12 drops of lilac oil. Give it a shake, spray and if the scent isn’t strong enough, simply add a few more drops of lilac oil.

Once you’ve made this lilac scented room spray you will be very tempted to spray it in every room in your house. And someone may want to use it in the bathroom to cover up other less…ummmm….pleasing aromas.

But, do not, I repeat do NOT, let them.

You’ve captured the fragrance of heaven in a bottle and you wouldn’t want to go and tarnish it now would you? 😉

I’m a MUCH better version of myself when the sun is shining! 🤪 So I’ll just be over here today plotting and planning how my husband and I can be snowbirds someday when the kids are out of the house.

If you could spend your winters (and apparently most of spring too!) in any part of the country, where would it be?
Happy weekend sweet friends!! We’ve had a LOT of Happy weekend sweet friends!! We’ve had a LOT of rain lately (which is saying something when you live in Oregon) and I’ll admit that it’s affecting my moods a bit. I feel like I’m dragging and struggling to find the energy to get stuff done. So don’t mind me if I’m over here looking at photos of my garden in the summertime and finding that it keeps me hopeful about those days to come. They will come, right?! 🤪.

What are your favorite plants that you look forward to seeing in the summer?
