DIY Framed Chalkboard Art

chalkboard-square2
Well…it seems like a long time ago when I entered my dining room in Debra at Common Ground’s Design Challenge.  I took to heart all of the fabulous ideas and suggestions offered by Debra’s readers and have slowly been implementing them between finishing up my kitchen remodel.
I think I might have been juggling too many remodeling balls at one time but I am almost done with all of my current projects. whew! Just in time for the holidays!
So, I’m excited to give you a little sneak peek of my dining room as I share this fun project I just completed.  I first saw this idea on the fabulous Miss Mustard Seed’s blog and knew I wanted to make one as well.
chalkboard-3
I just love the idea of having a chalkboard in a dining area to share the menu of the evening or to have a fun seasonal quote. Even better this is what you see immediately when you walk in our front door.  I love greeting my guests in this way!
To create my chalkboard, I used some inexpensive framed art that went with my old dining room color scheme but that I was now no longer using.
chalkboard-tutorial
I know, it’s pretty. But it was bought on clearance and it was gathering dust in the garage.  And the frame was perfect for my project!
It was actually harder to remove the canvas than I thought it would be.  I ended up cutting the canvas out with an exacto knife.
chalkboard-5
I left the wood frame intact because I found when I tried to remove it, it was starting to damage the decorative frame. I didn’t want to spend any money on this project so I scrounged up a piece of scrap beadboard from my kitchen project.
chalkboard-tutorial2
I measured the size I needed by flipping the frame over and measuring the outer opening.  This way I could attach the board to the inside frame from the back and any cut edged would be concealed. Next I painted the back of the beadboard with two coats of chalkboard paint and painted the inside plain wood frame by mixing some acrylic champagne and pearlized white paint to get a nice sheen.  I then nailed the board onto the inner frame from the back.
chalkboard-4
Here you can see an up close glimpse of the white paint on the inner frame and the pretty sheen.
chalkboard-2
And here’s how it looks when you come in my front door.  What do you think about my new wall color and wainscoting? I’ve added it to the dining room and my entry and hallway! It was a ton of work but so worth it! We have to finish the flooring, add a chandelier and hang the curtains and then I’ll share the big reveal! Do you like my subtle Halloween touches? I adore the little black “chandelier” and mirror cut-outs.  Dollar Tree of course!
chalkboard-1
Robert Louis Stevenson is one of my favorite authors and poets and I love this quote by him.  I thought it was perfect for Autumn and a reminder of how each day we plant seeds into the lives of others.  I hope that is how you see us here At The Picket Fence…as seed planters. We strive to plant seeds of joy, happiness, encouragement, inspiration and truth into the lives of our readers…
chalkboard-square2
and you each do the same for us.  And the harvest? Why beautiful friendships of course!
Thank you for taking a peek at my dining room.  I hope you like my little DIY Framed Chalkboard Art and as always….thank you for joining me At The Picket Fence!

That’s a great frame! I’ve been making a lot of chalkboards lately (having my first boutique soon) 🙂 and it’s hard to find frames with that kind of detail.

    Nice work!

I love it! It is gorgeous!! The quote is wonderful as well. I have a chalkboard in my kitchen that was actually bought from Homegoods as a chalkboard. When I painted the trim around it a different color, I used tape around the edges. It pulled a little of the chalkboard surface off. I bought some chalkboard paint and repainted it. Now every time I try to erase what I have written it will not come off. What chalkboard paint have you had success with?

Happy weekend!! My limelight’s are finally bloom Happy weekend!! My limelight’s are finally blooming and I try really hard to not play favorites among the flowers in my garden but these beauties have my heart and bring me so much joy.

After a weeklong vacation, we all feel so happy to be back in our haven. As a homemaker in the truest sense of the word (the maker of a home), knowing my husband and children consider this the place where they feel the most relaxed and at peace means all of my intentions and efforts in this area are worthwhile. It’s not perfect and WE are not perfect by a long stretch. But, it’s where we feel the most free to be imperfect. And that makes it pretty wonderful! 🌱

When I started blogging, he was only 6 years old and some of you have been apart of my community here for that entire time. Now, he's 19 and there is a reason parents are told not to blink because the years truly do go faster than I ever could have imagined. He has become such an incredible young man we are so excited to see how God is going to unfold the next chapter of his life. We celebrated with parties galore (SO many open houses to attend!) and made memories we'll forever cherish. My mama heart was filled to bursting with the joy of it all! Now we're taking some time to just enjoy these warm, summer days making even more memories because, when you’re at this stage of parenting, you know all too well how much you need to grasp every opportunity to spend time together.

I hope your summer is off to a great start too dear friends! 🪴

I’ll have some new photos of house projects and life events to share with you soon but, got now, I’m just going to enjoy this gorgeous first day of summer after our ridiculously long, wet spring. ☀️
