In a private FB group, this question was asked: “I’m feeling so overwhelmed with the depravity of the world right now and the important job of raising our four young children (all under four) in a Godly manner. I’ve taken this to the Lord in prayer, but I could use some encouragement, advice, or anything from parents who have been doing this longer.”
I have the amazing privilege of getting asked to speak at events in my area and the topic I get the most requests for has to do with this exact question/concern. Here’s a little bit of what I say at the end of my message to provide some encouragement and tips for navigating our current cultural climate as wives and mothers. I hope it will encourage you too!
1. Our goal as women should be to cultivate a haven of peace in our homes. This will give our families a place that is safe, secure and reliable when the world outside isn’t that way.
2. Jeremiah’s letter to the Israelites let them know that they had plenty of time to lay a foundation in exile even if they knew in the back of their minds that it wasn’t going to be forever. They had to establish routines and go about their daily lives. The beauty of this is that it was something they already knew how to do. It would instantly create a sense of familiarity in a time when everything around them felt unfamiliar. Rhythms and routines are a gift for us and our families when life is uncertain.
3. We have to take the necessary steps to arm ourselves with the truth so that we can be discerning as exiles. “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” Heb 5:14
4. We must advocate for what is best for our communities. As Christ-followers we know that God’s design is best for people. Don’t be afraid to advocate for that.
5. Grow comfortable with being uncomfortable. This world is not our home. “What God says is best, is best, though all the men in the world are against it.”
6. Get in the Word and pray.
Finally, remember, you are not alone. I’m right here in it with you!
