You know, lately I’ve found myself in a season of transition. My kids keep doing this thing that is driving me crazy and causing tears to well up in my eyes at any given moment.  But I’m powerless to stop it from happening.

They keep growing up. Seriously, they have some nerve doing that! And, just to add insult to injury, many of the spaces in our home are having to grow up right along with them.

What once was a play-room filled with a wooden train table and a little red play kitchen and a floor covered in matchbox cars and stuffed animals has now grown up into a game room complete with Foosball table, dart board, art desk, TV and video games.

Although there are still the occasional stuffed animals strewn about.

Since I can’t seem to stop this whole growing up business I’m just going to have to get on board with it…literally! I thought it would be fun to embrace the whole “game room” feel and create some unique ways to display photos of those rascals who keep getting bigger.

I picked up old games at thrift stores making sure that the game boards were in good shape and that the color palette would work with the room.

In order to attach the photos to the board I simply used a thumbtack and a binder clip. It will be fun to switch them out even if I might cry each time I put up a new school picture.

Sniff…sniff…

While I was sniffling I decided to add some special words to the game boards. Words that describe these people I love with every fiber of my being.

Words that I hope they will read and feel affirmed.

Affirmed knowing we see them.

We see their personalities and their quirks and all of the gifts and abilities God has given them.

And in our house we count a good sense of humor as a talent AND an ability! 😉

personalizing game board photos

We think it’s important to not only tell our kids HOW much we love them but also WHAT we love about them.

But, at the end of the day, what we love most about them is that they made us a family.

I’ll be sharing more in the coming weeks about this room that is growing up right along with my kids so stay tuned. And don’t forget to head over to Capturing Joy with Kristen Duke for all of the fantastic ideas and inspiration in this series!

This is a fabulous idea and oh I hear you about the sniffing/tears. My kids are all grown up but at times I still get teary when they do or say something that reminds me of when they were little. Wonderful idea for a series too!

Vanessa – this is ahhhhmazing! Perfect for a game room! I know what you mean about them growing up – you just want time to stand still sometimes! Enjoy each moment of each season – they’re all fun! We’re getting ready for our oldest son’s wedding this fall – and it doesn’t seem possible! I’ve been very sentimental lately looking through all the family photos and I’m sure I’ll shed a few happy tears on the big day!

What a fun idea!!! I need to clean out our games. So many not being played with 15 and 17 year olds. Some not worth saving, but the boards would be perfect for this in the bonus room! Thanks for such a fun idea!! ~Christy

I completely empathize with you Vanessa!! My oldest is in 2nd year military college and I tear up all the time remembering building sand castles on the beach with him as a baby and watching him play ‘golf’ in our backyard with those little plastic toy golf clubs!! Our youngest is 14, talks about the career he is dreaming of and getting more grown up too. They will always be your babies and they will always love to be treasured as your little darling babies too! Love your photo display – very clever!! ~ Heather

Happy weekend!! My limelight’s are finally bloom Happy weekend!! My limelight’s are finally blooming and I try really hard to not play favorites among the flowers in my garden but these beauties have my heart and bring me so much joy.

What’s bringing you joy today dear friends?
I can’t properly express how much joy it gives m I can’t properly express how much joy it gives me to know that my family loves being home. After a weeklong vacation, we all feel so happy to be back in our haven. As a homemaker in the truest sense of the word (the maker of a home), knowing my husband and children consider this the place where they feel the most relaxed and at peace means all of my intentions and efforts in this area are worthwhile. It’s not perfect and WE are not perfect by a long stretch. But, it’s where we feel the most free to be imperfect. And that makes it pretty wonderful! 🌱

Extreme rain and cooler temperatures followed by extreme heat then back to cloudy and rainy. But the silver lining is that when the sun finally does reappear we definitely don’t take it for granted. I’m working on a blog post to share all of the details of our family room shelving makeover but I’m super impatient and just had to give you all a sneak peek!! We are SO happy with how they turned out and it finally looks like I’ve always envisioned. Our quick fix years ago (scroll to see the before photo) never felt quite right but now? Soooo much better!! 🙌🏻 Big shoutout to our amazingly talented friend Matt @redemptive_woodworx for bringing our vision to life and doing such impeccable work.

I hope you all have a great start to the 4th of July weekend and make sure to check my stories later for Friday Funnies!

When I started blogging, he was only 6 years old and some of you have been apart of my community here for that entire time. Now, he's 19 and there is a reason parents are told not to blink because the years truly do go faster than I ever could have imagined. He has become such an incredible young man we are so excited to see how God is going to unfold the next chapter of his life. We celebrated with parties galore (SO many open houses to attend!) and made memories we'll forever cherish. My mama heart was filled to bursting with the joy of it all! Now we're taking some time to just enjoy these warm, summer days making even more memories because, when you’re at this stage of parenting, you know all too well how much you need to grasp every opportunity to spend time together.

I hope your summer is off to a great start too dear friends! 🪴

Happy first day of summer dear friends!! I can’t believe it’s been so long since I posted something new here but life has been crazy. I’ll have some new photos of house projects and life events to share with you soon but, got now, I’m just going to enjoy this gorgeous first day of summer after our ridiculously long, wet spring. ☀️
