Hello Picket Fencers!!
This is Angelina from JoJo and Eloise. I am so excited to be back here with you sharing another fun tutorial.
I cannot believe that Spring is almost here, aren’t you excited!! I don’t know about you but this Seriously has to be one of my favorite Seasons of the year.
I am sure for those of you living in the colder climates, Spring can’t get here soon enough!
So today I thought I would share a Layered Skirt with you, that almost looks and feels like a Spring Rainbow!!
So hopefully this will be a little Ray of Sunshine for some of you {*Wink*}
So here we go ladies.
I first started out with an array of different colored cotton fabrics. There really is no right or wrong in color scheme or choice. So go ahead and mix it up and have fun.
I wanted the skirt to be roughly 20 inches long, so I cut 2 strips of each color ( on the fold of the fabric ) at 5 inches wide.
You are going to start off by taking 2 strips of different colors and place right sides together and stitch along the top ( you can finish each edge with a Serged or Zig Zag stitch as you go or when you have attached all the strips of fabric together ). Continue to do this with each color, being sure you are placing the colors according to your preference from top to bottom. If any of your fabrics are different lengths, trim off and make your ends even.
You will do this all over again with your other strips, leaving you with 2 panels a front and backside of your skirt.
Then take the RIGHT sides of your skirt panels and place them together. Stitch up the both sides and hem the bottom of your skirt.
You then will take the TOP edge of your skirt and gather it. I use a Ruffle Foot that I bought for my machine. (you can get one at most sewing stores or if you machine requires special feet, then you will have to order it from the company) You can also use the LONGEST stitch length on your machine and leaving a LONG thread tail, you will pull on the BOBBIN thread and gather as you go.
For this skirt I wanted to add an attached sash, to be able to tie in a bow. So instead of doing a solid waste band, I cute 2 pieces at 4 inches wide. (your length will be determined on the size waist your are making this for).
I finished my top edges and then pressed over 1 inch.
Pin your waist band right sides together to the top of your skirt.
For the sash I cut two 6 inch wide strips on the fold of the fabric, you will fold in half and stitch up the sides, leaving the ends open for turning. Press your sash with an iron. Turn one raw edge of your openings in and top stitch your sash.
Place your sash in the opening of the SIDES of your waist band and pin in place.
Stitch the sides of your waist band and trim off any excess fabric. Top stitch the top of your waistband and leave about 1.5 inch opening on your sides. ( NOTE: if you want to make this a full elastic waist band skirt you only need to leave one side open for the elastic, because I wanted a FLAT front and an elastic back, I left both sides of my waist band open 1.5 inches to secure the elastic ) for your elastic to go through. Run your elastic through and stitch in place.
You will then have an attached sash to your skirt.
And, now you have your very own Spring Rainbow to brighten your days.
The color options are truly endless, so have fun and get creative.
I hope you enjoyed and thank you once again, Heather and Vanessa for having me over.

I love the flower 🙂
Love this skirt and tutorial. Thanks for sharing. On question, What fabric did you use?
Hello Vistra, Thank you so much for your Sweet comment. On the question of fabric, I used basic Quilters Cotton Fabric. You can pick it up at Joann’s or at a local fabric/Quilt shop. There are so many beautiful colors available so you really could make a skirt for all Seasons. I hope this helps.

Very cute! Question: how long is each color strip? You said 5 inches wide, but what is the length? Also, is there a tute on that fabulous flower? Thanks!
I am making this skirt for both of my girls for Easter, but I am a complete novice and am a little confused. I have the skirts put together and gathered, but the waist part is stumping me. I am not sure how to know what length to cut the waistband pieces–does the back piece need to be longer to allow for gathering around the elastic? If so, how does that work when attaching it to the skirt? And when you say to topstitch the waistband, is that along the edge of the one inch you folded over to make a casing for the elastic to go in? Sorry if these are silly questions–like I said, I am a beginner (I have never sewn any apparel before, and have only done really simple projects in the past)! I am so close–just need a little help to finish these off and they will be so cute for my girlies! Thanks!
I am having the same questions Leah! I have sewn before, but am a little out of practice with clothing. Did you figure it out? Any tips?
I thought I must have missed something but it seems i have the same question as the others. Is there a formula you use for working out the waist?
I have the same question. How long is each strip???
