A Legacy of Sighing? Confessing on a Simply Sunday!

It was a simple request.

One I make every day.
“Ian, go put your shoes and your coat on, grab your backpack and get in the car.”

As I turned and headed down the hallway to help his little sister with her shoes, I heard it.
“Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”
I don’t know the proper word to describe a great big SIGH, but that was the gist of it.

“Really?” I wanted to say.

“You are sighing because you have to put your shoes and coat
on and grab your backpack and get in the car!”
While these words didn’t actually come out of my mouth, I was thinking them very sarcastically in my brain.
Boy, it must be rough to be 8 years old these days!
And, then it hit me.
In one of those very unpleasant moments of parenting, I realized exactly why he did that and exactly where he learned it.
My brother-in-law once told Heather that we are the “Sigh-ing-est” family he had ever met.  We took a vote and decided he could stay in the family even after making that crack at us!
But, you know what?
He is totally RIGHT!
We all do it. All.the.time.
Sorry Mom, Dad and Heather.
If I’m throwing myself under the bus you are all coming with me!
And I know when I sigh it is usually over really dumb things.
Like, waiting in a long line even though there are also other people waiting in the same long line.
Or being asked for a snack from my children….over and over and over.
Or hitting all of the red lights on our way to the store.

iStockphoto,Photographs,red light,red lights,signals,stoplights,stops,traffic,traffic controls,traffic lights,transportation,vans,vehicles

Or finding that they have run out of olives at said store.  But, really, that is pretty ridiculous don’t you think?
I mean, how do you run out of olives?
“Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh”
Ummm….I digress. But, you get the idea.
And, as I heard that big sigh escape my son’s mouth, I realized that this was a legacy I was not proud of leaving. It wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I thought of things being passed down from one generation to the next.
So, I did a little bit of research and a LOT of soul searching.

The first place I went to was my B.I.B.L.E. (yes that’s the book for me!).

I looked up “Sighing” in the Concordance and you know what? There was only ONE verse that used that word and it had to do with sighing out of sorrow.

For some reason, I had a feeling that wasn’t exactly the kind of “sighing” I’ve been doing lately.
Well, that got me to thinking. What was I feeling when I let that little puff of air escape me?
What did it represent and what did I think I was getting away with by inhaling and exhaling in a very loud manner?

And that is when the soul searching began.
It didn’t last long, though, because it was quickly revealed to me what this whole sighing business was really all about.

It was my way of

Grumbling

Complaining

Expressing Frustration without using actual words

And, let me just tell you friends, there are A LOT of verses in the “Good Book” about those emotions!

They aren’t pretty and they sure did hit home.

“These men are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.” Jude 22:7

Ouch! Now I know why I don’t spend a lot of time in the book of Jude!

“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.” Philippians 2:14

I’m fairly certain my sighing doesn’t make me “shine like a star”.

And, I’m also fairly certain that while I may have fooled myself into thinking that it is better than actually verbally expressing my frustrations, I’m not really fooling anyone else!

I think they call it being…gulp…PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE.

Because, let’s be honest. What do I really have to sigh about?

I lead an incredibly blessed life.

I have an incredible husband who loves me, 2 amazing children and a home that not only provides shelter but is a place where I get to express my creativity. We have food, shelter, clothing and transportation times 2.

I have had my share of sorrows, that is true.
But my little day-to-day life’s issues do not warrant that kind of response.
Not when there are other things I should be sighing about.

I should sigh over the broken and hurting around the world….around my city…in my neighborhood.

I should sigh because there are children who went to bed hungry last night and will probably again tonight.

I should sigh that my children are growing up in a world that promotes living for “numero uno” more than having a servant’s heart.

These are the things that should cause me to inhale and then deeply exhale.

Maybe there was a reason that the only verse in the Bible that mentions sighing has to do with there being a day when “sorry and sighing will flee away.” Isaiah 35:10

Until that day, my desire should be to sigh for the lost…the hurt…the hungry.

And maybe, just maybe, if my children heard their mother sighing over those things, they will begin to sigh for them too.

Now, THAT is a legacy worth leaving! Don’t you think?

So true, Vanessa! It is funny (or not) that my kids noticed I sigh everytime I hang up the phone. I never noticed. However, I really don’t think I sigh then because I am frustrated or complaining. I have no clue why I do it. I have tried to break that habit but it is hard because I don’t realize I do it! But like you I have sighed out of frustration at the store, waiting in line, or times when I think things should work a little differently. Like you, I really have no reason to sigh. We have hit a rough patch here lately but it isn’t anything that affects the health and welfare of my husband and kids so I need to start being thankful in those situations instead of sighing over trivial things!

Great post for me before we head to church this morning!

I just want to be honest about my response to this post. Usually when I visit a new blog and the first thing I read are bible quotes, I quickly click away. Not because I’m *anti* Christian, I’m just not a big church and bible type person.

This post was very different for me though! You expressed the kinds of sentiments that I wish to see in churches around me. The kind of churches that are honest about their faults and work to change themselves and their communities for the better. If I found a church that embodied the kinds of feelings and priorities that I took from your post today, no matter the denomination, I would start attending regularly.

Thank you so much for this pick me up this morning. I’m a loyal reader now for sure!

    Amen!
And you know…It’s just one big bad terrible habit! I have to pray about this daily and have failed multiple times. But, I keep plugging away at sighing, or anything else that comes from me in the form of exasperation!
Thankfully, we have a Book that tells us exactly what and how we should be responding. And I for one, want to be a shining example to my little and big people.
    Great post!
    Love, Kristin

So true, thank you for pointing it out. I get upset at my kids all the time for complaining about the little things, but of course they learn it from me. A reminder to appreciate and be thankful for what we have is welcomed. I cant wait to show this to my kids….good topic for Sunday!

Thanks for posting this. I, too, come from a long line of “sigh-ers,” and my children called me on it a while back. You are exactly right about it being a passive aggressive form of complaining and grumbling. Now that school is out for the summer, I need the reminder!

I love these Sunday posts, Vanessa. You’re so honest and open and lovely – and I’m sure that’s a WONDERFUL legacy to be passed down your family. And you always look for things that you can improve in yourself, and that’s an amzing legacy too!!

Nope, you haven’t managed to pull yourself off your ‘amazing mummy’ pedastal – not by a long shot!!

SIGH- I am sighing because that was such a sweet and true message. Our little SCheeks is a sigher too…sometimes followed by an UhgggGH~ It is funny what we do, isn’t it, that impacts those all around us. I think sometimes we don’t even know we are doing it.

One of the guys I work with said to me the other day. Okay-short sigh- then looked at me to see if I “got it”. What? I asked. Okay- short sigh. What? I asked again. He said- I wish I had a quarter (remember when it used to be a penny) for every time you said (repeat-Okay-short sigh). I asked- Do I do that? Everytime you come out of that office to fix something-when you are done..was his answer. Well, how funny is that? I started monitoring myself and I do it ALL the time. OKAY is my go-to word -rather than HOT Damn I guess! lol So, I have trying to not say that anymore..but now I am wondering what I am replacing it with. Sorry for the swear word on your blog-I don’t know what to replace it with that would get the meaning across about my Okay-short sigh!;>)

Have a wonderful Sunday- GREAT post- okay-sigh- bye-xo Diana

    very good, timely post.
    🙂
my husband is always reminding me to ‘breathe’ as if i would forget. too often it comes out as a sigh.
wondering WHY i do that now, as it isn’t usually a thing of discontentment…maybe the passive-aggressive diagnosis is right on the nose.
    OUCH!
thanks for the, uhm, encouragement! blessed sunday!

Vanessa, this is a wonderful post! So convicting. . . I’m afraid I’m guilty of sighing a lot, too. I’m glad you wrote this–I need to realize what I’m actually communicating and think about what I WANT to communicate instead. Thank you for inspiring me!

OUCH! I am with Debra…is there a verse for eye-rolling?! Oh, I sigh, roll my eyes, cross my arms, pout, etc…mostly at my dear husband! I guess our kids are like mirrors because the first time I saw my daughter roll her eyes at him, I knew exactly where she got it! It made me realize that my attitude and behavior towards Rob is so important! This was very good! I always laugh when you write! Sleep well friend!

I’d never though about this before, but I’m afraid I know EXACTLY what you mean about sighing. You’re so right; it’s NOT a good legacy to leave. Fortunately, I don’t think either of my daughters have followed my occasionally poor example, but I’ll be watching myself more closely from now on. Thanks, Vanessa, for your beautifully transparent post.

This is one of my most favorite projects from my b This is one of my most favorite projects from my book Life in Season!

Because, if heaven has a fragrance, I’m fairly certain it smells like lilacs.

I think that somewhere along the way the verse in the Bible that said, ‘heaven will smell like lilacs’ just got lost in translation. But it HAD to have been in there at some point, right?

When I bury my head in the blossoms (which I absolutely MUST do every single time I walk past them), I immediately feel a stirring in my soul.

It seems like I wait forever for my lilac tree to bloom. Every year I anxiously watch as the buds begin to form on the branches and then when the blossoms finally burst forth I begin that agonizing process of deciding the absolute perfect moment to snip them and bring them inside.

And then, after all of that waiting and watching it’s just over…done. Because, unlike heaven, lilacs don’t last for an eternity. So, making my own lilac room spray seemed like the perfect way to enjoy their fragrance long after the blossoms have faded.

Here’s how to make it! Ingredients: Water, Vodka, Lilac fragrance oil. Directions: Fill spray bottle with 50/50 ratio of water to vodka. Add 12 drops of lilac oil. Give it a shake, spray and if the scent isn’t strong enough, simply add a few more drops of lilac oil.

Once you’ve made this lilac scented room spray you will be very tempted to spray it in every room in your house. And someone may want to use it in the bathroom to cover up other less…ummmm….pleasing aromas.

But, do not, I repeat do NOT, let them.

You’ve captured the fragrance of heaven in a bottle and you wouldn’t want to go and tarnish it now would you? 😉
We had two back to back days of sunshine (the most We had two back to back days of sunshine (the most we’ve had in a LONG time) and now we are back to pouring rain. This has officially confirmed what I’ve know to be true for awhile now.

I’m a MUCH better version of myself when the sun is shining! 🤪 So I’ll just be over here today plotting and planning how my husband and I can be snowbirds someday when the kids are out of the house.

If you could spend your winters (and apparently most of spring too!) in any part of the country, where would it be?
Happy weekend sweet friends!! We’ve had a LOT of Happy weekend sweet friends!! We’ve had a LOT of rain lately (which is saying something when you live in Oregon) and I’ll admit that it’s affecting my moods a bit. I feel like I’m dragging and struggling to find the energy to get stuff done. So don’t mind me if I’m over here looking at photos of my garden in the summertime and finding that it keeps me hopeful about those days to come. They will come, right?! 🤪.

What are your favorite plants that you look forward to seeing in the summer?
We’re going to be giving our laundry room a make We’re going to be giving our laundry room a makeover soon. It’s LONG overdue! In fact, the folks from the counter company were just here taking measurements. While we have made some simple, inexpensive updates over the years, it still has many of the original elements from when the house was built in 1992.

Two of our bathrooms are also in need of major makeovers. And we’ve saved up enough money over the years to tackle those projects. But, for the most part, we made the decision to use the bulk of that money in another way. While we knew that it was financially wise to invest in our house, we also knew that the greatest investment we could make was in our children.

I’ll admit, there are times where I see other people doing massive overhauls of their entire home in a matter of months and I feel a prick of envy. But, we decided that if our choice was between waiting a bit longer to enjoy a renovated bathroom or going on adventures as a family, we would choose adventures every time. And we don’t regret that decision for a single second. It’s not that we haven’t tackled home projects (we’ve done a lot!). It’s just that it’s been a slow and steady process.

Most recently, we let our son pick where we would travel for spring break since this is his senior year of high school and we are trying to make up for lost time. With so much of life ‘paused’ for two years, we have appreciated these moments more than ever. And, since he’ll be heading to college in the fall, we are very aware of how important it is to spend this time together while we still have a modicum of control over everyone’s schedules.

We have many years left to remodel our home but only so much time left to make memories with our children.

And, while I’m always happy to look around my home and see rooms that are updated and more reflecting of our style, it doesn’t compare to the joy I feel when I look around my home and see the people I love the most who have been shaped by the many adventures we’ve experienced together.
Happy Saturday!! After endless days of rain (and h Happy Saturday!! After endless days of rain (and hail and snow) we are finally getting some sunshine and warmer temperatures. I’ll be honest, it’s really affected my spirits having one gloomy day after the next. So this is a much needed reprieve. Our cherry trees are showing off outside my kitchen window and we plan to get outside and make the most of these days while we have them.

What’s the weather like where you are?
“The devil, darkness, and death may swagger and “The devil, darkness, and death may swagger and boast, the pangs of life will sting for a while longer, but don’t worry; the forces of evil are breathing their last. Not to worry…HE’S RISEN!” (Charles R. Swindoll).

Happy Easter! He is risen indeed!
Who has believed our message? And to whom has the Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

For he grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of parched ground; he has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to him.

He was despised and forsaken of men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and like one from whom men hide their face, he was despised, and we did not esteem him. Surely our griefs he himself bore, and our sorrows he carried; yet we ourselves esteemed him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was pierced through for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon him, and by his scourging we are healed.

All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on him. (Isaiah 53)
I try to always remember to put a water bottle in I try to always remember to put a water bottle in my car before I go to pick up my daughter from school. She didn't ask me to do this, but a few months ago I began to notice that she was often thirsty when she would get in the car. Her water bottle filled up at the beginning of the day was empty by the time school got out and she would ask if she could have some water from my hydroflask. So I make sure to have one waiting for her. It's just a simple thing, really. But, I want her to know that I'm paying attention, that I see her.

Isn't it amazing how small gestures can make us feel less invisible? Knowing that someone is thinking of us and takes the time to meet a need that we might not have even realized we had? These little acts can have big impacts. What is something that someone has done for you recently that made you feel valued and seen?

What have you done for someone else to remind them that you are paying attention to their needs?

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
― Charles Dickens
