Paper Angels and Pretty Trees

simply decorated Christmas tree with paper banner

I don’t know about you, but it seems that beautifully decorated homes all dressed up for Christmas have taken over my social media accounts these days. In fact, this week I’m joining a group of bloggers who are going to be sharing some of their favorite holiday rooms. Hosted by The Everyday Home and Town and Country Living, each day we’ll be bringing you loads of Christmas eye-candy.

All Through the House Button

But friends, these days, while I regularly find myself sighing and swooning and maybe even drooling a bit over all of the impeccably decorated trees and Pottery Barn worthy table displays, I can’t help but wonder about something.

Something that seems to be missing.

Where oh where are the ornaments made with Popsicle sticks?

Where are the cheesy ornaments you’ve had since 1972?

Where are the ones made by little hands at school and brought home with great anticipation, eager to hang front and center on the Christmas tree?

Where are the real ornaments?

So, you see, I decided it was high time to show off a different kind of tree.

One where paper angels aren’t relegated to the back.

Because, you see, I believe that the pretty and the practical can peacefully co-exist.

In fact, I believe that when our decorating is grounded in reality, it might just be even MORE beautiful.

I believe that we can pull out those old family ornaments and display them proudly, seamlessly incorporating them into your decor without hiding them away in the far corners of your home.

And I believe that the best way to blend the old with the new is by putting a fresh spin on things.

Using a fun tree stand, like the basket pictured above, is a great place to start.

And adding a touch of whimsy, like this oversized music sheet paper garland, makes such a great statement.

The thing is, my heart flutters the most when I pull out this type of ornament.

And this one of me circa 1981.

And when I hang those treasured ornaments on the tree next to sparkly mercury glass jars, they seem to take on a shiny new luster.

I don’t believe that Christmas decorating has to be an either/or situation.

We don’t have to either have really beautiful decor OR use our cherished family treasures.

Simple Christmas mantel decorating idea

I think that that, if we put our minds to it, we can find a way to have the very best of both worlds.

I want my kids to see that I enjoy being creative in our home and using it as a type of canvas to express that creativity.

What I don’t want is for them to have memories of mommy sticking all of their homemade ornaments on the back of the tree each year. Or not even putting them on the tree at all! Now, granted, for the sake of space some of them do end up on the backside.

But, I really want my kids to know that those ornaments are even MORE beautiful, more important to me than anything I could ever buy ready-made at the craft store.

And that preparing our homes for the season isn’t nearly as important as preparing our hearts.

Thank you so much for meeting me in my family room today At the Picket Fence,

I have a tree decorated just like you describe. Treasures made for me by my children and grandchildren. And yes, my daughters ages 47 and 50 still roll their eyes at their mom! One daughter totally refused to let me use one from her early early childhood. Yes, it’s not pretty but it was made by her little hands at age 3.

I’ve been thinking the same thing this year. Perhaps one too many years of NOT having the family treasures out. I think next year will be a little different for me 🙂 Your house looks beautiful.

I love this post, the message here. And as a mom of one grown boy whose handmade ornaments were destroyed when a roof leak caused major damage in our attic, I long for those precious keepsakes every year. I think it’s awesome that yours take center stage and mingle so beautifully with all the other decorations in your home. To me, this is magazine worthy….pottery barn has nothing on you.

What beautiful memories you kiddos will have with those precious ornaments. I have to admit, I am guilty of hiding some of mine. But in my defense, most have fallen apart because of age. But in my daughters room, she has her own tree, and on that tree she’s decorated it with a few treasured pieces that are still hanging on. Pieces that she created, and are still meaningful to her. So proud of her, as she’s always known the true meaning of the season. It’s not about the gifts, but why we celebrate the season. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home, and those precious ornaments. May the season be filled with joy for and your family! Merry Christmas!

Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter through the narrow Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.”.
.
When I was a little girl we took a trip to Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson, MO. One of the attractions there is the Marvel Cave. The whole theme park was actually built right around the cave! I will never forget the feeling of descending into the darkness. We had to walk down a steep, narrow path and I could feel the rocky walls beginning to close in on me. From time to time, our guide would even have to call out for us to duck our heads so as not to whack them on rocks that were jutting out. And just when it felt like we had been walking forever; just when it felt the most narrow and the most dark; just when we were starting to get really weary from navigating this path, we turned the corner and found ourselves awestruck as we gazed at this enormous room. Everywhere we looked there were stalactites and stalagmites. Lights had been installed and they reflected off of these formations creating the most beautiful colors on the walls. There were pools of water in a shade of aquamarine I had never seen before and waterfalls flowing from upper levels. That long, winding, damp trek had been so very worth it. The descent into darkness had revealed light…and life!

My prayer for you friends, is that you will look at that narrow path with the small gate as an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to experience the kind of freedom that our souls are longing for. The wide and broad path of the world promises us a freedom that is fleeting and temporary. But at the end of the narrow path, there is hope and peace and life everlasting.

I’m choosing the narrow path. And in spite of the hardships, in spite of the challenges and the fears and the times that can feel as dark as the journey down into a cave, I wouldn’t trade a single minute of it.

When I started blogging, he was only 6 years old and some of you have been apart of my community here for that entire time. Now, he's 19 and there is a reason parents are told not to blink because the years truly do go faster than I ever could have imagined. He has become such an incredible young man we are so excited to see how God is going to unfold the next chapter of his life. We celebrated with parties galore (SO many open houses to attend!) and made memories we'll forever cherish. My mama heart was filled to bursting with the joy of it all!
