Porches, Decks, Fashion and Dining…Oh My!

DSC_0315
It’s Day Three of the Blogger Block Party!  Today we are sharing a little bit of everything…porches, decks, a little summer fashion and some outdoor dining…Whew!

First, let’s head over to the NW and pay Vanessa a visit!
Welcome to Oregon! No, you’re not seeing things…that is actual BLUE SKY behind my house!
It may not last long so let me quickly show you around my outdoor spaces. We just got a new lawn put in this year and my hubby couldn’t be happier. They told us that we had about 12 different varieties of grass and that the Horticulture school would probably love to come out and take a look at the “experiment” we had going on in our yard!
Come a little closer and you are on our front “porch”. I still have big plans for this space (painting the trim being one of them), but in the meantime I did a quick makeover just using things from around my home.
I wanted a little table but didn’t want to spend any money. So I pulled out this big planter and added a glass top that goes with those inexpensive round “decorator” tables.
I have about 5 of these stashed away and now I’m glad I held onto them!
Instant Table!
And now let’s head out back to our deck! There were plans to remove the old deck and replace it with a 2-tiered one this summer but…well…we bought a car instead. Isn’t that the way life goes?
So, it just got spruced up a bit and filled with plants to help cover up as much of it as possible!
And just because I love Jenn from Green Door Designs, I’m doing something I never thought I would do. I’m participating in her Summer Fashion Party and actually sharing what I wore yesterday. Yikes!
Most of the day I spent in my “grubbies” as I worked in the yard and around the house.
But we did have to go to a Birthday party in the afternoon so I had to put on non hole-filled-covered-in potting-soil-clothing and here is what I wore.
Ummm…this will probably be the only time I do this so…here goes!

That picture isn’t just hazy from the photo editing…that is one dirty mirror in my kid’s bathroom.
One more reason not to do this very often…who wants to clean the mirror every time!
I’m pretty much a walking TJ Maxx Billboard with this outfit. Everything (except the bracelet) was purchased there right down to my Steve Madden sandals and my $12 bag!

My hubby must have liked that I wasn’t wearing sweats for once because he made me one of my most favorite summer meals last night. We may not have a fabulous pizza oven like Miss Judy but he manages to make this scrumptious pizza on our regular ol’ grill.

The recipe for this Grilled Pizza with Sausage, Peppers and Onions and Oregano Ricotta is a Bobby Flay specialty and can be found here.
And now, I’m heading down the block to visit Heather. If only it were as easy to do in real life as it is in Blogland!
Hey there’s some blue skies here in Kentucky too!
DSC_0320_edited-1
Believe it or not we haven’t seen a lot of this so far this summer.  Usually the South is sunny and hot this time of year but I think Vanessa decided to share some of that Northwest rain with us because we’ve had more than our share of rainy days so far…I’m ready for the hot, lazy days of summer to arrive permanently! We always host several summer parties at our house and spending the 4th of July with us has become a tradition for many of our friends.  This year is no exception!  In honor of the Summer Blogger Block Party I wanted to deck my front porch (heh. pun intended) out a little more than I normally do.
DSC_0334_edited-1
Of course it wouldn’t be the 4th of July without a ginormous flag out front!
DSC_0300
I think my favorite spot on our front porch has to be my porch swing…we wrote it into the contract when we bought the house: MUST LEAVE PORCH SWING! Did you spy my herb garden basket that the girl and I made a few weeks ago? It decided to get in on the patriotic act too with a few small flags! It’s doing really well!

DSC_0299
I added a few quilts to the back so on a chilly evening we can curl up out here and watch the fireflies in the woods!  They put on an amazing show every night…it’s like nature’s own fireworks! I often find the girl curled up here with Bear swinging in the breeze and it makes my heart happy!

DSC_0303
Here is where you will often find Bama Boy and me on a summer morning.  We love to come out here and drink coffee together and watch the world wake up

no-sew-pillow-7
You can get a glimpse here of my no-sew patriotic pillows! They add a nice touch of the 4th without being too over the top.

DSC_0324
This summer I decided to add a little more seating to my front porch since we often have several people wanting to sit out here during a party.  I added this little table I’ve had hanging around forever in this empty corner by the front door.  I found these two faux wicker and iron chairs at Family Dollar for $13 each and thought they matched perfect!  Now it wouldn’t be a party in Kentucky without some Ale 8!

DSC_0327

Ale 8 is a regional soda and we were introduced to it when we moved to the Bluegrass State.  I love to keep a bucket of drinks on the porch and deck during a party so our guests can help themselves!

DSC_0306
We often end up with a pile of muddy shoes and flip-flops on our front porch as the neighborhood kids traipse in and out for popsicles and a glass of lemonade.  I like to provide a basket in the summer for them to put their shoes in.  It keeps my porch looking nice and Bear from stealing a flip-flop or two, or three…

DSC_0310
Well it’s time to head on in out of the heat.  I can offer you a glass of sweet tea or how about one of Bama Boy’s special mojitos?  I’ll be sharing the recipe on Friday at my Fresh from the Garden post! If you decide to stay awhile, you can join us back out on the front porch tonight where we can sit by the candlelight, listen to the cicadas sing their song and the fireflies dance!

My front porch…my favorite place to be!

P.S. I’ll be teaching you how to make that no-sew 4th of July pendant banner next week so stay tuned!

Your porches both look wonderful! Vanessa, I know you were happy to see that blue sky! Heather, I want you to know that it really made me smile to see the photos of Ale-8. One of my college roommates was from Mt. Sterling, and she introduced me to Ale-8. My aunt and uncle live in Lexington, and they brought be a carton when they came to my wedding. I had Ale-8 for breakfast on my wedding day, 26 years ago today! 🙂

That is an incredible front porch. I don’t know why front porches aren’t as popular in other areas of the US like they are across the south. Yours is so warm and lovely. It’s easy to understand why it’s a gathering place for family and friends.

The front porch serves as the face of the home. It is important that you embellish it with the right accents in order for it to exude a friendly and welcoming vibe. With these wooden swings in place, you and your visitors will be immediately greeted by the beautiful and cozy seat as you open the gates of your home. Their lovely designs, superb construction and excellent finishes will surely capture the interest of people walking by.

Front door wreath….✔️ The very last Christmas dec Front door wreath….✔️

The very last Christmas decorating to be completed and one of the most important since there’s nothing I love more than welcoming people into our home this season.

I bought the wreath for $15 from a wonderful local vendor, reused my favorite bells and added a velvet bow in the color I’m carrying throughout the house this year.

Do you buy a fresh wreath each year or do you use a faux wreath on your front door?

The first day of December and the first Sunday of The first day of December and the first Sunday of advent. As we enter into a month that can be filled with stress, anxiety, worry and even sadness, let us turn our hearts towards the ONE who came as the ultimate, undeserved gift. Because it’s all about Him.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours dear friends! 🍂
Its that time of year again. I share this recipe e Its that time of year again. I share this recipe every November because it’s JUST.THAT.GOOD!

And I have a confession ...I’d rather have cranberry sauce smothering the turkey on my plate than gravy any day!! And this, this right here? Well it’s the best (and easiest!) cranberry sauce ever!! I eat on crackers and sandwiches and sometimes just by the spoonful. It’s so yummy! And I’m just so very thankful for all of you that I’m going to leave the recipe right here instead of making you go to the blog to get it. I promise you won’t regret having this on your Thanksgiving menu but be warned...you may find yourself up in the middle of the night sneaking some helpings of this deliciousness. Or maybe that’s just me!

Ingredients:
2 pounds fresh or frozen cranberries
2 oranges
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup white wine.

Instructions:
Wash and pick over berries, removing any that are soft. Peel and dice oranges removing any seeds. Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Bring to a full boil. Reduce heat and continue cooking until cranberries pop open and mixture is thickening.
For best flavor, prepare and let stand for several days before using.

Want to know what it is? It’s all about being EXTRA!

Take the base recipe up a notch by using a full stick of butter, extra tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and an extra 1/2 tablespoon of Lawry’s seasoning salt.

I guarantee you’ll never go back!

You’re welcome. 😉🎄

The great debate on social media over whether or not Christmas decorations should appear before Thanksgiving is one I just let roll on past me. Because I am so unbelievably thankful for this life, my family, my friends, this country, this home and most of all my Savior.

Having my home all ready to welcome the next sacred season doesn’t take away one iota from my ability to express gratitude on the official day set aside each year where we do that collectively.

And when the last slice of turkey has been eaten and all of the leftovers put away, I’ll be over here ready to be fully present in the month of December and soak up every bit of it! 🦃🎄

Not too long ago, someone told me that they liked Not too long ago, someone told me that they liked it better when I just talked about decorating and didn’t mention anything else. This person preferred me to keep any opinions or convictions to myself and just focus only on content about home decor, crafts and recipes. Aside from the fact that I’m always astonished that people feel so free to say things like that, I do agree that it would be a lot easier and more palatable if I didn’t talk about things like a Biblical Worldview, apologetics and the nature of reality itself. For one thing, Instagram wouldn’t throttle my account with its algorithms that are skewed to diminish voices like mine. It would be much easier to be so tethered to this app that I change everything I post to fit into its preferred framework. I would be asked to be part of influencer groups and activities like I was years ago. But I’m not that person anymore. Yes, the core of this community will always be an emphasis on homemaking which will include decorating and recipes but I can’t separate that from the core of who I am as a follower of Jesus Christ.

It would be so much easier for me to just show you the latest Amazon products I’ve bought and tell you to “comment” to get the links. But I’m not called to take the easy path. Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.”

I truly believe that so many have been lulled into thinking that the narrow gate wasn’t really all that narrow. But, it’s never been more obvious that it really is. And every day I seek to stay on that very narrow way. More than ever before, I believe that our world needs to know that there is objective truth and a solid foundation to stand upon as we navigate our lives. My role as a homemaker is predicated on that foundation and everything else flows out of it. Talking about these things isn’t going to get me lots of views here.

But I live for an audience of ONE.
The first time we hosted my in-laws for a meal was The first time we hosted my in-laws for a meal was in 1998. I was a new bride and eager to impress them. It did not go well. Let’s just say there was a bit of a garbage disposal mishap.

It’s been over 25 years since then and I’ve learned so much about what really matters when it comes to hosting and caring for my family well during the holiday season.

The peace we long for in our home begins with our hearts. If you want your home to feel more peaceful during the upcoming holiday season, I have five things to consider that will make that not only possible but predictable.

Here, in my little corner of social media, you won Here, in my little corner of social media, you won’t find a lot of unboxing of brand new items for Christmas.

What I’m unboxing are the decorations in the attic that I’ve had for years and figuring out how to give them a fresh look. I added new lights to an old pre-lit tree that no longer worked because I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of it. I’m putting out a different set of mugs at the hot cocoa station and the advent candles are arranged with greenery from outside.

As our feeds are filled with so.much.stuff, I want to offer you a reprieve. A place where you will find less emphasis on what’s happening in our homes and more on what’s happening in our hearts.

More than ever before, I can see just how much people are needing the hope found in Christ and that will always be the focus here.

So, while you may not see me unpacking a massive, new tree or telling you to “comment for the link”, what you will see is encouragement to turn our hearts to what matters the most and let that reflect in every corner of our homes this season and all year long. 🌲
