A Tale of 3 Pumpkins … Pumpkin Three: Ribbon

Well we have come to the end of our tale of the three pumpkins.  First, we met the lovely and vintage Book Page Pumpkin.  Then our journey brought us to the glamorous and classy Faux Nailhead Pumpkin and last we meet the sweet and cheery Ribbon Pumpkin.
Isn’t she just a little sweetheart?!
ribbon-pumpkin-6
Believe it or not she proved to be the most difficult pumpkin to make, though you’d never know it by her demure personality and the simplicity of her design.
The dilemma: how to attach the ribbon. First I tried white glue. yep. nope.  It just got messy and the ribbon started to become grimy and dirty, not the look we were going for.  I started to break out the handy dandy glue gun but truthfully was not in the mood to deal with hot glue and glue strings and all of that lovely stuff.  Enter the staple gun.
Here’s a quick step by step tutorial on how to make your own Ribbon Pumpkin.

Supplies:

Inexpensive foam pumpkins (I purchased this one from Hobby Lobby for $1.50)
Variety of ribbon and rick rack in colors of choice
A branch (I got mine from yard)
Staple Gun
Pumpkin Project
Step 1: Measure and cut your ribbon to overlap at the stem and at the bottom of the pumpkin.
Step 2: Stagger your thinner strips of ribbon around the pumpkin running along a piece of ribbon along every groove of the pumpkin using three pieces of ribbon at at time.  Using your staple gun staple three pieces at the top near the stem and then run your ribbon down the pumpkin and secure at bottom with another staple.  Continue this pattern around the entire pumpkin.
Step 3: Attach your rick rack matching up the pattern and overlapping them over one of the thin pieces of ribbon.  Overlap and staple at top and bottom.
Step 4.  Place additional strips of ribbon around pumpkin  leaving as little or as much of the orange peeking through as desired, being sure to secure with staples at top and bottom.  Wrap and staple one piece of rick rack around top of pumpkin width wise to cover up as many staple as possible at top of pumpkin and  trim excess ribbon at top and bottom.
Step. 5.  Poke a think twig or stick through top of stem of pumpkin. Tie additional ribbon and rick rack in loopy bows around base of step to help cover any staples still showing.  You can also tie short pieces of ribbon to mimic little sprigs poking out from stem.
This pumpkin will not stand “upright” due to the ribbon on the bottom but it it lovely leaning against other pumpkins in a vignette like I have here.

I really love this pumpkin for a couple of reasons.  It is so sweet and dainty AND it didn’t require glue or paint which was nice after the other pumpkins. It was definitely the least messy pumpkin to make!

So here ends my tale of three pumpkins!

I hope you enjoyed this little tale and the stops along the way as we met three ways to transform cheap foam pumpkins into unique works of art! Thank you for joining us for Pumpkin Week…At The Picket Fence!

This one is cute too. I actually like it leaning like that so the fact that it has to lean is a little serendipity.

I have no idea why, but rick rack reminds me of my grandmother for some reason.

Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter through the narrow Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the way that leads to life, and only a few find it.”.
.
When I was a little girl we took a trip to Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson, MO. One of the attractions there is the Marvel Cave. The whole theme park was actually built right around the cave! I will never forget the feeling of descending into the darkness. We had to walk down a steep, narrow path and I could feel the rocky walls beginning to close in on me. From time to time, our guide would even have to call out for us to duck our heads so as not to whack them on rocks that were jutting out. And just when it felt like we had been walking forever; just when it felt the most narrow and the most dark; just when we were starting to get really weary from navigating this path, we turned the corner and found ourselves awestruck as we gazed at this enormous room. Everywhere we looked there were stalactites and stalagmites. Lights had been installed and they reflected off of these formations creating the most beautiful colors on the walls. There were pools of water in a shade of aquamarine I had never seen before and waterfalls flowing from upper levels. That long, winding, damp trek had been so very worth it. The descent into darkness had revealed light…and life!

My prayer for you friends, is that you will look at that narrow path with the small gate as an opportunity. It’s an opportunity to experience the kind of freedom that our souls are longing for. The wide and broad path of the world promises us a freedom that is fleeting and temporary. But at the end of the narrow path, there is hope and peace and life everlasting.

I’m choosing the narrow path. And in spite of the hardships, in spite of the challenges and the fears and the times that can feel as dark as the journey down into a cave, I wouldn’t trade a single minute of it.

When I started blogging, he was only 6 years old and some of you have been apart of my community here for that entire time. Now, he's 19 and there is a reason parents are told not to blink because the years truly do go faster than I ever could have imagined.
