You may think that you are looking at photos today of fabric scrap Christmas trees.
But I see something very different when I look at them.
I see a Saturday morning that found me sitting at my kitchen table cutting up little squares of fabric and gluing them onto cardboard cones.
The Christmas music playing in the background, seamlessly blending in with the sounds of ordinary life on an ordinary day.
My youngest in the family room, happily playing and lost in her imaginary world. My son and husband working hard to complete a puzzle in the dining room and alternating between long stretches of silence followed by excited shouts of “I found the right piece!”.
To the casual observer it wouldn’t seem like anything special was going on. But, as I sat there cutting up scraps of fabric and gluing them to cardboard cones, that ordinary morning suddenly felt extraordinary.
The sounds of ordinary life on an ordinary Saturday morning became sounds of blessing…
…and thankfulness…
…and bliss…
And I wished I could bottle it up. It would sit on the shelf alongside the bottle of my sweet babies belly laughing for the first time. And the bottle of my son’s tiny hand fitting so perfectly in mine. And the bottle of my daughter singing “Jesus Loves Me”.
So, when I look at these fabric scrap Christmas trees I don’t see just another craft.
I see the memory of a moment in time.
A glorious, wonderful, extraordinarily ordinary moment.
How to make a Fabric Scrap Christmas Tree
Supplies:
Cardboard or foam cone
Hot Glue Gun
Scissors (I used pinking shears)
Fabric remnants
Cut fabric into small squares. I chose to use two different fabrics, one being burlap for added texture.
Beginning at the BOTTOM of the cone, hot glue squares all the way around, overlapping slightly.
Continue working your way up the tree.
If you decide to make these fabric scrap Christmas trees, I highly recommend that you make them on just an ordinary day.
Because you never know…maybe your ordinary day will end up being extraordinary too!

I find myself getting that warm feeling this year for the holidays.. I have been spending more time with my sons doing stuff around the house, nothing grand but things that made us laugh and remember times in the past. All of that made me want to start on the holidays.. Your story is so sweet.. I love those times.

I love the tree and fabric project! It sounds like it was a wonderful day creating with the sounds of your family in the background enjoying other activities but close by. It sounds like everyone was content. Those are beautiful moments in time!
These are absolutely adorable! They’d be perfect in bedrooms where you want a little Christmas, but would like to blend with the decor. Great craft for my teen!
