Simply Sunday…A Special Guest!

We are just so thrilled to have a special guest with us today for Simply Sunday!
Laurie from Heaven’s Walk has a beautiful home, a beautiful blog and a beautiful heart.
Let’s welcome her today as she shares it with all of us here at the Fence!

“Aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands.”
1 Thes.4:11
Through the blessing of blogging, this passage has come to mean more to me than ever before.  Meeting new friends, witnessing incredible creativity, and sharing encouraging words– have all inspired me to take a closer look at what God is calling me to do. I have learned that living a quiet life, tending to daily tasks in and around my home, and creating things with my hands that glorify the Lord, are all treasures I hold close in my heart.  I never would have reached that happy realization without you ~ my blog friends.

So, when Heather and Vanessa asked me to guest post here At The Picket Fence today, I was more than thrilled.  It is just one more way to “work with my hands” and share my testimony.  I pray that you will be as blessed with this post as I am with your gift of friendship.

“Utterly engulfed
and wanting more,
buried,
drowned,
intoxicated,
with the vastness of Love.

Losing myself as the waves wash over me,
through me,
surrounding me;
Caught up in a hurricane of overwhelming peace,
I have let go,
and He has found me.”
                           -James L. Rubart
I just finished reading this fictional book by a very inspiring Christian author.
It spoke to me like no other book has.
It forced me to take a good hard look at who I was
and what kind of heart I had.

What did I keep in the rooms in my heart?

It hurt to look
and I was not happy with myself.
What did God see when he looked at me?

When He looked into the rooms of my heart,

was He pleased with who I had become?
Was I living the life for which He intended me to?
Was there room enough in my heart for all that He was and had to offer me?

{source}
And in response, He humbled me this past week.
Brought me down to my knees in complete and utter weakness.
Tears of pain, and frustration at myself ebbed and flowed like an angry sea in my soul.
I felt spent,
lonely,
lost,
and
drowning.
Crumpled, torn, and tossed in the wet sand
like a leaf ripped from a sea grape.

I was forced to look deep inside my heart
to search for the woman that He created me to be,
and to rediscover my purpose in life ~
to know God intimately and to enjoy Him forever.

“You will make known to me the path of life;

In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
– Psalm 16:11
I needed to hear His voice of reassurance and comfort.
I needed to know that He had not abandoned me in disappointment.
I needed to be lifted up and strengthened in His love
and by His grace.

I needed to know that I was not alone.

“I will go before you and make the rough places smooth;
I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars.
I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden wealth of secret places,
So that you may know that it is I,
The Lord, the God of Israel,
who calls you by your name.”
-Isaiah 45:2-3

He called me by my name.

I heard Him clearly and lovingly.

He was with me as I worked outside today.
He was there in the hot sun on my shoulders
and the smell of the fresh cut grass.
I could see His reflection in Maizie’s big brown eyes as she stood in the big bathtub
amidst the soapy bubbles.
He spoke to me of forgiveness
and love,
and pressed upon me the importance of living a simple life.
One that I work with my hands
and create things that glorify His name.

Picking, freezing, and canning vegetables from the garden
and fruits from the trees.
Hanging sweet smelling laundry out on the line.
Feeding the birds and squirrels that live in the old trees embracing this old farmhouse.
Living peacefully,
quietly,
simply,
and reverently;
glorifying His name in everything that I do.

{source: It’s Me}

God swept the rooms in my heart clean.
He forgave me.
He lifted me up.
He held me in his arms,
and He loved me
back to joy.

{source}

I rediscovered the incredible love that has always been there for me.
That I had pushed aside for my “wants” and “needs”.
The love that I had been so trivially taking for granted.
“A key to open heart’s desires,
yours and those beyond,
Cords are cut and chains are broken
when we live our calling strong.”

{source}

 I am still walking with God ~
only a lot closer this time,
clinging to His strength,
and will practice listening to the Holy Spirit –
knowing that I will find Him in the quiet –
because I don’t want to miss anything He has to say.
I wear His key of truth around my neck that will open the treasure in my heart.
His treasure.
I wait to hear His voice
in the peacefulness of my days
here at Heaven’s Walk.
And I am listening to my heart,
for it knows the truth
because it is
“where the temple is and where the King dwells.”

    Thank you so much for sharing your heart with us today, Laurie. As I was reading your words I felt like you were talking directly to my heart. And then near the middle of your post you quoted Psalm 16:11…which I had just read this morning. I couldn’t help but feel encouraged and cry a few tears of joy. God is so good and I am continually amazed at how He reminds me of His love and truths through the simple things in life. God Bless! Carrie

    Laurie is such a beautiful woman inside and out. She has an amazing presence and soul that makes you feel at home, comforted, like you have known her for years. I truly believe that that is the work of the Lord through her. She spreads love and friendship wherever she is.
    Thank you so much for having her here today.

    I have loved Laurie since I discovered her when I first started blogging. She is a dear, sweet soul and I have a feeling that one day she and I (and Debbie) are going to meet up somewhere, somehow!

    I love how much she loves the Lord and I can just hear that shining through every word she wrote. I have to go back now and note the book she just read. xo Diana

    Unquestionably believe that that you stated. Your favourite reason appeared to be at the net the easiest factor to be mindful of.
    I say to you, I definitely get annoyed at the same time as other
    people consider worries that they just do not know about.
    You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and also defined out the
    entire thing without having side-effects , other folks could
    take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

    Hello would you mind stating which blog platform you’re using? I’m planning to start my own blog
    soon but I’m having a tough time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for
    something completely unique. P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!

It’s time again for Tip Tuesday! Would you belie It’s time again for Tip Tuesday! Would you believe that a few years ago I found a sock in our pantry? Yes, a sock. Just there on the shelf next to the cereal. But did it stress me out? Nope! We got a good laugh out of it especially after it was claimed by its owner (my teenage son) and it was a reminder to me of why the daily mayhem of life doesn’t overwhelm me because I’ve already established areas in my home that remain clutter free and offer me a visual exhale. #tiptuesday
Yesterday on the way home from school I had the ra Yesterday on the way home from school I had the radio tuned to my daughter's favorite station and a song that was playing had a line in it that really stood out to me. It made reference to a 'season of the sticks' which I think its safe to say must mean winter. I thought that was such an accurate, albeiet kind of depressing, picture of this time of the year.While we definitely have more than our fair share of evergreen trees here in Oregon, we also have plenty of trees and bushes that are reduced to sticks during the cold months. But, this morning as I looked out my kitchen window, greedily sipping from my mug of coffee, I marveled at the beauty of the winter sunrise. The sky was all pinks and oranges with frost on the rooftops and a little bit of fog. And, I realized that part of why it was so amazing is because I could see it more clearly through the sticks. The bare branches allowed me a view that I wouldn't be able to see if those same branches were covered in leaves. Being stripped down to almost nothing revealed something magnificent.We have seasons of the sticks in our lives too, don't we? Times when we feel as though we've been stripped bare and left exposed. It's easy to think that this is a place where all is ugly and dark. And yet, just like the winter sunrise was more visible because of the bare branches, the vulnerability we feel in the winter season of our souls allows us to get a glimpse of beauty that we wouldn't see otherwise. In the lush, warm seasons it's so easy to become comfortable. But in the bare, cold seasons we recognize just how much we need to rely on the One who placed the stars in the heavens and is sovereign over all.If you feel like your soul has been stripped bare and you've been left exposed and vulnerable, may I encourage you today to ask the Lord to help you to see the beauty in this 'season of the sticks'.“Answer me quickly, O Lord! My spirit fails! Hide not your face from me, lest I be like those who go down to the pit. Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul." Psalm 143:7
I just went to make my mid-morning protein shake a I just went to make my mid-morning protein shake and grabbed a banana out of the freezer and was about to put it into my shake before I realized it was a frozen egg roll. Sooooo that's how my day is going so far! 🤪How about you?It's honestly fairly representative of my state of mind these days as I can't seem to make the date on the calendar match the date in my spirit because it feels like it should be January 45th. Every year this month drags on and every year it seems to surprise me for some reason. In addition, my heart just feels heavy as I witness a lot of darkness and sadness around me. So, I'm choosing to control what I can control by making my house feel as cozy as possible, relishing the sunshine whenever it dares to peek through the clouds, gathering inspiration for warmer weather projects and, most importantly, resting in the comfort of the sovereignty of my Father.“God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ So that everyone he has made may know his work..." Job 37:5-7

This week, I’m offering a gentle reminder from my own parenting experience after feeling my heart pricked with conviction about what was waiting for my daughter every day after school. I hope it will encourage you! 🌿#tiptuesday
The day after Christmas I found myself laundering The day after Christmas I found myself laundering and folding all of the linens we used the previous night as we hosted my husband's side of the family for dinner and other festivities. As I laid out each cloth napkin and folded them one by one, I couldn't help but be struck by what a simple, yet meaningful, task it was. It's such an honor and privilege to be the hostess and, at this stage of my life, I realize that this has almost one hundred percent become my role now. Our parents are in their 70's and have either downsized significantly or simply don't have the energy to take on hosting duties for a large group. I could resent this. I could feel overwhelmed by it. But, instead, I'm choosing to embrace it knowing that, someday, I too will pass the hosting torch and I hope that I will be welcomed with love and attentiveness. So, I fold the linen napkins, taking pleasure in the way all of the creases line up and how neat and tidy they look in the drawer of my dining room buffet. These seemingly simple chores are part of the lifeblood of homemaking and my attitude towards them can either be one of gratefulness or grumbly-ness (yes, I'm making up words now).And I’m choosing gratefulness.“This job has been given to me to do. Therefore, it is a gift. Therefore, it is a privilege. Therefore, it is an offering I may make to God. Therefore, it is to be done gladly, if it is done for Him. Here, not somewhere else, I may learn God’s way. In this job, not in some other, God looks for faithfulness.” (Elisabeth Elliot⁣)
