Hardwood Floor Hallway Makeover

wood_floor_landing_and_hallway_makeover www.atthepicketfence.com

The first time I walked through the doors of our home I saw it. It was kinda hard to miss.

Green carpet. Oh, sure, it wasn’t everywhere. There were hardwood floors in the kitchen and breakfast nook, slate in the entry and mudroom, neutral carpet in the family room and bedrooms.

But everywhere else there was green carpet. Up the staircase which greets you from the front door and running down the upstairs hallway. In the office to the right of the entry and in the living room and dining room to the left.

Green carpet. It wasn’t the most offensive shade of green but it certainly wasn’t doing the house any favors!

I didn’t hesitate for a second about buying this house because it ticked so many of the boxes and besides…I would be replacing that green carpet lickety split, right?

Fast forward almost 5 years and we finally replaced the carpet in the living room, dining room and office. But, frankly I was stumped about the upstairs hallway. You see, the bedroom carpets were in really good shape and they were a nice neutral shade. We didn’t want to have to replace them but we also had to take into consideration the flooring in the other parts of the house. Slate in the entry (right below this hallway), hardwood floors in the kitchen and carpet in other rooms). That’s a lot of different things going on!

So, after hemming and hawing and pondering and questioning I FINALLY made a decision!

hallway before1 atthepicketfence.com

And the upstairs hallway got new hardwood floors!

Green carpet? What green carpet? It’s always looked like this, right?

wood_floor_hallway atthepicketfence.com

Now, I have to admit something. While I was writing this post I was thinking about how many people are going to tell me they don’t like my yellow walls. That yellow is “out”. So I hesitated.

I almost didn’t share this makeover.

hallway before3

But, you know what? 5 years later I still love my yellow walls. I mean, come on people! I live in Oregon. I gotta get my ‘sunshine’ one way or another, right?

hall_table_with_lamp atthepicketfence.com

And, are you ready for another confession? That lamp isn’t plugged in.

Because there is no outlet on that wall. But there SHOULD be one!

So, I put a lamp there anyway. Just for looks.

lamp on console table in hallway www.atthepicketfence.com

And it is a looker of a lamp, isn’t it?

books in tray on table atthepicketfence.com

And, since I’m already confessing things I might as well fess up about my addiction to trays. I gravitate to them in a store like my son gravitates to pie crust.

basket_under_table www.atthepicketfence.com

Oh and baskets…I’m kind of addicted to them too. This one perfectly softens up the hardwood and is filled with old quilts.

wood_floor_landing_and_hallway_makeover www.atthepicketfence.com

And yes…that is another basket in our master bedroom. It’s a problem. I know.

Thanks so much for meeting me at the Fence today!

It looks beautiful, Vanessa! I couldn’t believe what a difference our hardwood floors made when we took up carpet last Summer and put them in. I like your yellow walls and, after all, it is your house and you do what you love in it. In our old house I had four rooms with yellow walls.

I SO totally get the lamp for visual appeal thing…I do that in a hallway too. Yes, there should be an outlet and there will be one day…just not today! I think we are too critical of ourselves at times. Post away, enjoy your baskets, the perkiness your yellow brings into your home and keep on sharing. 🙂

Baskets, trays… great addictions girl 😉 The floors look great and seeing yours will help me not mind the mess and work we are going to have installing ours. They are gorgeous!! And my mom totally had a “fake lamp” in her entryway, for many years, until my dad put in an outlet last time she was visiting me as a surprise. It’s a looker of a lamp for sure!! Vanessa,

Your floors look absolutely positively divine – and yes, like they were *always* there, indeed.

As for your yellow walls they look GREAT – never ever be a slave to trends, make no apologies, love what you love. To thine own self be true! And your walls look so awesome brightening up the space and look how well it looks with the flooring now too. Well done.

As for your “fessin’ up and keeping it rea” well kinda glad you did. Makes the rest of us feel better about out little secrets, too. But it isn’t that difficult to get electric brought down from the attic, I’ve done it more than a few times over the years.

Our last house had yellow walls throughout and I won’t be surprised if we do it again in the next one 🙂 The great thing about yellow walls is that they are actually pretty neutral so you can mix up the accent colors all though the house with no problem! And I love the indoor sunshine.

    Vanessa,

Love it all! Love love the yellow. I have yellow walls in my master bedroom and a yellow print wallpaper in the master bath. I plan to paint my kitchen yellow later this year. LOVE the calmness of yellow:)

Did you leave carpet on the stairs? We are in the process of considering pulling carpet and replacing with hardwood throughout the main floor and upstairs hallway – like you leaving the bedrooms carpeted. I worry about the stairs being slippery. We have a multi-level home so we are only have eight stairs from the bedroom level to the living room level.

    Any thoughts?

I LOVE THE hardwoods. But, I think I got you beat… my house has blood red wall to wall carpeting throughout the house, up the stairs, etc. AND the back of the house gets loads of sun so in each room at the back of the house, the carpet was PINK in spots! Not too long ago, someone told me that they liked Not too long ago, someone told me that they liked it better when I just talked about decorating and didn’t mention anything else. This person preferred me to keep any opinions or convictions to myself and just focus only on content about home decor, crafts and recipes. Aside from the fact that I’m always astonished that people feel so free to say things like that, I do agree that it would be a lot easier and more palatable if I didn’t talk about things like a Biblical Worldview, apologetics and the nature of reality itself. For one thing, Instagram wouldn’t throttle my account with its algorithms that are skewed to diminish voices like mine. It would be much easier to be so tethered to this app that I change everything I post to fit into its preferred framework. I would be asked to be part of influencer groups and activities like I was years ago. But I’m not that person anymore. Yes, the core of this community will always be an emphasis on homemaking which will include decorating and recipes but I can’t separate that from the core of who I am as a follower of Jesus Christ.

It would be so much easier for me to just show you the latest Amazon products I’ve bought and tell you to “comment” to get the links. But I’m not called to take the easy path. I truly believe that so many have been lulled into thinking that the narrow gate wasn’t really all that narrow. But, it’s never been more obvious that it really is. And every day I seek to stay on that very narrow way. More than ever before, I believe that our world needs to know that there is objective truth and a solid foundation to stand upon as we navigate our lives. My role as a homemaker is predicated on that foundation and everything else flows out of it. Talking about these things isn’t going to get me lots of views here.

It’s been over 25 years since then and I’ve learned so much about what really matters when it comes to hosting and caring for my family well during the holiday season.

The peace we long for in our home begins with our hearts. If you want your home to feel more peaceful during the upcoming holiday season, I have five things to consider that will make that not only possible but predictable.

What I’m unboxing are the decorations in the attic that I’ve had for years and figuring out how to give them a fresh look. I added new lights to an old pre-lit tree that no longer worked because I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of it. I’m putting out a different set of mugs at the hot cocoa station and the advent candles are arranged with greenery from outside.

As our feeds are filled with so.much.stuff, I want to offer you a reprieve. A place where you will find less emphasis on what’s happening in our homes and more on what’s happening in our hearts.

More than ever before, I can see just how much people are needing the hope found in Christ and that will always be the focus here.

So, while you may not see me unpacking a massive, new tree or telling you to “comment for the link”, what you will see is encouragement to turn our hearts to what matters the most and let that reflect in every corner of our homes this season and all year long. 🌲
