It’s a blank canvas! Sharing the before pictures of my new house…

new house

There is something so exciting yet slightly intimidating when faced with a blank canvas! That is how I felt the first time I stepped into my new home.  Like it was one large blank canvas waiting for me “paint my picture” on it, knowing what I would choose would set the tone for the entire home.

It was also the first time I would be decorating a home from scratch as a “home decor/diy blogger.” There’s pressure in that folks! At our last home my taste and style evolved over the years and when we left it was still a mish mash of ‘before and after.” Project in my mind that never made it onto the canvas.  This time around I have PLANS people! I have a vision….

Today I wanted to share with you the BEFORE canvas…because every great AFTER must first start with a BEFORE! So, here’s a peek at my new home.

I will be sharing lots of fun projects, design ideas and decorating ideas with you but for now let’s take a TOUR of our new house! (and excuse the pictures they were taken with my phone. smile)

new house before picture front porch

I’m in love with our wrap around front porch, completely Southern including the addition of ceiling fans and rocking chairs!. We love the view from our porch, where we can sit and rock under the fans! When we enter the house from the front door we have a wonderfully large foyer and staircase.  It has great vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors.

new house front staircase before

I love that the stairwell is open on both sides and open along the top.

new house front staircase before

This angle is standing in the formal living room looking across into my new office complete with french doors!

house before office

Since this blogging gig has turned into a “job” and I use that term loosely since it’s so wonderfully fun, I am excited to have my own office! I love the french doors and that it’s on the main floor.  This will be mine…all mine! 🙂

 new house living room before

This is looking into the “formal” living room.  Because it’s not a large room, I am considering a grouping of club chairs in here.  I just love the intimacy of a grouping of chairs and I think it would make a nice place to hang with guests before dinner in the dining room.

new house dining room before

The dining room is most definitely one of my favorite rooms in the house.  Complete with wainscoting paneling, large wide crown molding and the trey ceiling the details are just lovely! I love how light and bright it is.  In fact the whole home, as you will notice, has gorgeous crown molding and wide baseboards throughout! Lots of attention to detail.

new house hallway before

Here is a view from the breakfast area looking back down the hallway into the kitchen and the entryway.  There is a full bath on the main floor which makes it really nice for guests.  The door you see leads to the finished basement, which we’ll visit shortly!

new house kitchen before

Are you shocked it’s not white?! ha.  We looked far and wide for a white kitchen in a home that was right for us.  Not an easy feat! It’s the one thing I compromised on, but I have great plans for it! I adore the hardwood floors and how open it is.  It also have stainless steel appliances and the cabinets are very high quality.  Stay tuned for some fun ideas in this space.

new house family room and breakfast area before

I think this room is TRULY my favorite space.  Maybe because I’ve laid claim to it as my “own hangout room.” With a formal living room and a recreation room in the basement, I am going to create a space here that is cozy and warm where I can watch my shows while the kids and Bama Boy hang out in the “man cave”  downstairs! grin.

new house backyard

This is the view from our backyard! Believe it or not, we are on almost an acre here.  All of the wooded area behind the fence is part of the property but we love that there is a smaller area fenced in for our dogs.  It’s the perfect situation.  It’s very quiet and private back here.

new house back staircase before

Another thing we loved about the house is the back staircase.  It makes it so convenient for the bedrooms on this side of the upstairs.  Unfortunately, it results in piles of things on TWO staircases…make that THREE since we have a basement.  Tell me we aren’t the only family who piles a million and one things on their stairs? 😉

new house daughters room before

This is a peek into my daughter’s new room. Her new black iron canopy bed was the first purchase we made for the house.  She is so excited to have a canopy bed and we’ve moved her from a twin into a full.   The best part of her room is her “other room.” Yes she has TWO rooms in one!

new house daughters room before

This is a finished attic space which she is going to make her “lounge.” What teenager doesn’t want their own lounge? ha!

new house daughters room before

You can see a sneak preview of the colors and look we are going for in her room.  This will be a fun one to decorate and she will be helping with lots of input and ideas!

new house craft room before

So I lied before, THIS might end up being my favorite space in the new house! My dedicated craft and photography room.  The room where I can work and leave messes and shut the door at the end of the day.  With a separate office, this space will only house crafts and props and supplies as well as an area set up for taking photos.  I’m so excited about the potential of this room!!

new house master bath before

I don’t have any decent pictures of the master bedroom, but here’s a glimpse of the master bath. It’s one of FOUR full bathrooms in the house so this one will mostly belong to me. 😉  It has an huge walk in closet with full organizational system.  It’s a dream bath and dressing area!

new house son's room before

So you are probably wondering why I’m showing you this room in the basement.  Well, we are converting this room into our son’s room, and I promise we’re not just locking him down in the dungeon.  He is moving back in with us, after a year on his own and we want him to have the basement as his “own space.” This room has a finished ceiling, walls, outlets and a door but otherwise it’s most definitely not finished.  This is our first project in the house.  We will be converting it to a cool “loft industrial” space for him.  Watch for this upcoming reveal!

new house recreation room before

Here are some pictures of the future recreational room i.e. “man cave”  and oh do I have plans for this room! My family will finally be getting their dedicated University of Alabama room! Roll Tide!

new house recreation room before

Can you believe this is a basement?! It’s so light, airy and bright with two large picture windows!

new house recreation room before

It also has heigh tray ceilings, lots of space to hang out and…

new house recreation room before

a back entrance to this gorgeous private brick patio!

new house brick patio

There are two more bedrooms upstairs, an office for my husband and a guest room as well as several bathrooms to decorate! Plenty of space for a family with a teenager, a college student and two dogs. 🙂

My weeks in the new house have consisted of tons of this….

shopping for new house

Two guess where I am here…..

shopping for new house

and this.. Ikea has become a “dirty word” with Bama Boy these days! ha!  The first room I am setting up is the family room.  Here’s a glimpse of the direction I am going in there…

rug for new house family room

What do you think?

mirrored and brass vintage retro table

Yes that is brass! Did I hear a collective gasp or does it meet with your approval?

Here’s a little secret I’m going to end with. Shhhh….we are leasing the house for now.  We had to get into something quickly and we decided renting for now was the best option to do that.   We have the option of buying it down the road, and we most likely will do that BUT for now it’s MINE but not really MINE.  So I’m going to be sharing TONS of great ideas to make fabulous, but not permanent, changes so that ANY house can feel like HOME!

My new home and I will see you back here….often…at the picket fence!

It’s perfect – what fun you will have designing and decorating it!

And it’s nice seeing brass make a come back. I’m not one for much contemporary these days but that is one nifty end table you shared!

PS – my best friend from high school played piccolo in UoA’s marching band when Bear Bryant was coach (yes, I am dating myself) and still is a huge Tide fan! Those were the days!

Wow! You definitely have a beautiful and spacious home. I can feel how excited you are about decorating and placing numerous pieces of elegant furniture in there. It’s good that you decided to work on the family room first. That carpet is lovely! I can’t wait to see photos of the completed project.

Front door wreath….✔️ The very last Christmas dec Front door wreath….✔️

The very last Christmas decorating to be completed and one of the most important since there’s nothing I love more than welcoming people into our home this season.

I bought the wreath for $15 from a wonderful local vendor, reused my favorite bells and added a velvet bow in the color I’m carrying throughout the house this year.

Do you buy a fresh wreath each year or do you use a faux wreath on your front door?

The first day of December and the first Sunday of The first day of December and the first Sunday of advent. As we enter into a month that can be filled with stress, anxiety, worry and even sadness, let us turn our hearts towards the ONE who came as the ultimate, undeserved gift. Because it’s all about Him.

“Who can add to Christmas? The perfect motive is that God so loved the world. The perfect gift is that He gave His only Son. The only requirement is to believe in Him. The reward of faith is that you shall have everlasting life.” (Corrie Ten Boom)

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours dear friends! 🍂
Its that time of year again. I share this recipe e Its that time of year again. I share this recipe every November because it’s JUST.THAT.GOOD!

And I have a confession ...I’d rather have cranberry sauce smothering the turkey on my plate than gravy any day!! And this, this right here? Well it’s the best (and easiest!) cranberry sauce ever!! I eat on crackers and sandwiches and sometimes just by the spoonful. It’s so yummy! And I’m just so very thankful for all of you that I’m going to leave the recipe right here instead of making you go to the blog to get it. I promise you won’t regret having this on your Thanksgiving menu but be warned...you may find yourself up in the middle of the night sneaking some helpings of this deliciousness. Or maybe that’s just me!

Ingredients:
2 pounds fresh or frozen cranberries
2 oranges
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup white wine.

Instructions:
Wash and pick over berries, removing any that are soft. Peel and dice oranges removing any seeds. Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Bring to a full boil. Reduce heat and continue cooking until cranberries pop open and mixture is thickening.
For best flavor, prepare and let stand for several days before using.

Gobble, gobble!! 🦃
It’s that time of year again!! Chex Mix will be ma It’s that time of year again!! Chex Mix will be made on repeat for the next month and I’ve figured out the secret to getting the BEST flavor.

Want to know what it is? It’s all about being EXTRA!

Take the base recipe up a notch by using a full stick of butter, extra tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce and an extra 1/2 tablespoon of Lawry’s seasoning salt.

I guarantee you’ll never go back!

You’re welcome. 😉🎄

Happy Friday!! I limped my way to the end of the w Happy Friday!! I limped my way to the end of the week and I’m feeling especially grateful for the twinkling lights around my home which give me so much joy.

The great debate on social media over whether or not Christmas decorations should appear before Thanksgiving is one I just let roll on past me. Because I am so unbelievably thankful for this life, my family, my friends, this country, this home and most of all my Savior.

Having my home all ready to welcome the next sacred season doesn’t take away one iota from my ability to express gratitude on the official day set aside each year where we do that collectively.

And when the last slice of turkey has been eaten and all of the leftovers put away, I’ll be over here ready to be fully present in the month of December and soak up every bit of it! 🦃🎄
IKEA vs Heirlooms: Why we need family treasures “ IKEA vs Heirlooms: Why we need family treasures

“My children have grown up seeing antique books on a coffee table, vintage toys in their bedrooms and even pieces of furniture that were all passed down from one generation to the next. But as my nest gets closer and closer to being empty, I’m keenly aware of the fact that many of these cherished items might not be as welcome in the homes of future generations.”

Not too long ago, someone told me that they liked Not too long ago, someone told me that they liked it better when I just talked about decorating and didn’t mention anything else. This person preferred me to keep any opinions or convictions to myself and just focus only on content about home decor, crafts and recipes. Aside from the fact that I’m always astonished that people feel so free to say things like that, I do agree that it would be a lot easier and more palatable if I didn’t talk about things like a Biblical Worldview, apologetics and the nature of reality itself. For one thing, Instagram wouldn’t throttle my account with its algorithms that are skewed to diminish voices like mine. It would be much easier to be so tethered to this app that I change everything I post to fit into its preferred framework. I would be asked to be part of influencer groups and activities like I was years ago. But I’m not that person anymore. Yes, the core of this community will always be an emphasis on homemaking which will include decorating and recipes but I can’t separate that from the core of who I am as a follower of Jesus Christ.

It would be so much easier for me to just show you the latest Amazon products I’ve bought and tell you to “comment” to get the links. But I’m not called to take the easy path. Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.”

I truly believe that so many have been lulled into thinking that the narrow gate wasn’t really all that narrow. But, it’s never been more obvious that it really is. And every day I seek to stay on that very narrow way. More than ever before, I believe that our world needs to know that there is objective truth and a solid foundation to stand upon as we navigate our lives. My role as a homemaker is predicated on that foundation and everything else flows out of it. Talking about these things isn’t going to get me lots of views here.

But I live for an audience of ONE.
The first time we hosted my in-laws for a meal was The first time we hosted my in-laws for a meal was in 1998. I was a new bride and eager to impress them. It did not go well. Let’s just say there was a bit of a garbage disposal mishap.

It’s been over 25 years since then and I’ve learned so much about what really matters when it comes to hosting and caring for my family well during the holiday season.

The peace we long for in our home begins with our hearts. If you want your home to feel more peaceful during the upcoming holiday season, I have five things to consider that will make that not only possible but predictable.

Here, in my little corner of social media, you won Here, in my little corner of social media, you won’t find a lot of unboxing of brand new items for Christmas.

What I’m unboxing are the decorations in the attic that I’ve had for years and figuring out how to give them a fresh look. I added new lights to an old pre-lit tree that no longer worked because I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of it. I’m putting out a different set of mugs at the hot cocoa station and the advent candles are arranged with greenery from outside.

As our feeds are filled with so.much.stuff, I want to offer you a reprieve. A place where you will find less emphasis on what’s happening in our homes and more on what’s happening in our hearts.

More than ever before, I can see just how much people are needing the hope found in Christ and that will always be the focus here.

So, while you may not see me unpacking a massive, new tree or telling you to “comment for the link”, what you will see is encouragement to turn our hearts to what matters the most and let that reflect in every corner of our homes this season and all year long. 🌲
