Older sisters.
If you have one, you’re blessed.
If you have one and you have a great relationship with them, you’re doubly blessed.
If you have one and you look up to and admire them you’re triply blessed.
And if you have one who does projects you love so much you decide to copy them then…well…you might just be right off the charts blessed!
You see, I fall into that last category. That off-the-charts blessed zone.
Which is why when I saw an over-sized kitchen towel with a recipe for Pumpkin Pie on it on sale for $2.99 I didn’t have to think too hard about what I would do with it.
My older sister…the one with whom I have a great relationship…the one I look up to and admire…well, she had already done a project using kitchen towels from Target. You can read about her fabulous framed kitchen towel wall art project here.
So, I copied her. Although I made the minor adjustment of using a poster board frame because of the size of my towel.
But, just like her, I made sure to iron the towel first to get out all of the wrinkles. And just like her I spray painted the frame and used spray adhesive to attach the towel to the cardboard backing.
Just like her, I loved how easy and inexpensive it was to create custom “art” for my home.
The thing is, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. I mean, I’ve been copying my older sister for years!
When she would go out on dates and tell me I could play in her room, I would put on her pink and white striped prom dress with the lace on the off the shoulder neckline and carefully slide my hands into the matching lace finger-less gloves. I would put the layers and layers of pearl necklaces on and stand back and look in the mirror and wonder if I would ever look remotely as beautiful and as “cool” as she did.
She would pick me up from school in her red Toyota Celica hatchback and I would be introduced to all of the great musicians…you know…Guns-n-Roses, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, LL Cool J, The Police.
And when I finally had my own car (a silver Honda Prelude hatchback) I knew just which music I would be listening to.
Not everyone can be off the charts blessed like I am.
Not everyone has a sister who loves them no matter what.
Who supports and encourages and motivates and commiserates.
Who comes up with fabulous kitchen towel wall art projects that you can copy.
Not everyone has a sister like that…but I do! 🙂
Love this idea and your love of family. On the look out now for cool dish towels! Thank you for the inspiration!!!
Thank you for stopping by Kristin! 🙂
What a great idea and what a great story.
Thank you sweet friend! 🙂
How sweet, love the project and so wish I had a sister. Beautifully said, thanks. I know she feels blessed to have you for a sister too!!!
Thank you Pam!
What a great find! and Love how you made it into art!
What a wonderful sister and wonderful memories you have! Does she still have the prom dress? lol
LOL! I don’t know if she still has the prom dress Chrisitina but I’m sure I could dig up some photos of it! 😉
I’ve seen lots of families make their own tea towel with a great family recipe. HMMM, that gets me thinking about what to give this year for Christmas! Love ya! PS: I have a sister like that too. She is an amazing cook!
I was thinking the same thing Vicki! It would be so easy to make a version of this using a favorite family recipe! 🙂
My sister (younger) and I were shopping at
Target several weeks ago and she bought
This towel. Just sent her theink to this post
Thanks for sharing.
Robin
Yay! Isn’t that towel fabulous? Endless possibilities!
You both are blessed… and so am I for knowing you! LOVE this heartwarming post. And, oh yeah the dishtowel wall art too!
Thanks sweet friend! We’re blessed by your friendship too!
precious! I was just thinking today how my brother and two sisters are my favorite people in the world…and how my hearts wells up over them.
I’m so glad you get to enjoy that experience, too. xo
Thanks Sharon! The older I get the more I realize just how precious (and rare!) it is to have that kind of sibling relationship. I don’t take it for granted. Glad you have it too!
What a sweet post, and a great idea!
Thank you Vicki! So glad you stopped by today! 🙂
You are blessed indeed! Love the project!
Thanks so much Marty! 🙂
Oh my how I love this post! I’m the older sister and I too had a Toyota Celica… targa-top convertable in white. And yes, we older sisters love to rock out to Guns n Roses… (still to this day) and our choice of fashion could be quite questionable for sure. But know that we love our little sisters and as we are now older, wish that we had been better role models for y’all. You have a great role model in Heather… and YOU darlin’ turned out pretty darn fabulous yourself!
Oh friend thank you so much!! It’s thanks to you older sisters that we younger sisters were able to have our “cool” factor go up quite a bit. 😉 And I know how much you value that special relationship sisters have with each other!
Good memories, Vanessa! We are thankful for our daughters! Mom and Dad
Love it! You are blessed indeed!
What a cool project! It’s great to have a sister that you not only look up to, but one that you love to the moon and back!
I saw this post and just had to write. I am the designer who designed that towel and I asked my older sister to write the recipe out since she has such nice handwriting and is always there for me when I need something. So nice to see it end up here.
I just wanted to say that I’m the designer who made this towel while at Target and I recruited my older sister to write out the recipe in her perfect handwriting! How fun to see it here on your blog. My older sister and I have almost always been best friends so extra fitting given your post content.
