Giveaway and Guest Posting!

DSC_0241-001
Could there possibly be a better way to start a week than with a Giveaway??
We don’t think so either!

And this one is extra special to us because we are offering it in conjunction with our Guest Post today over at the site of Glynnis Whitwer, editor of Proverbs 31 Ministries Magazine.
Glynnis is also an author, speaker, wife and mother and every day she shares her insights into life and faith on her wonderful blog.

We were so honored when she invited us to be apart of her Spring Series!
We are thrilled to be sharing some quick and easy ways to add inexpensive, yet beautiful, decorative touches to your home.

AND, we are giving you a chance to win a wonderful collection of decorative items to add a little charm to your own home!
The winner will receive the following:
A handled burlap candle holder with glass insert and a beautiful candle with a decorative decal. This burlap “bag” would also be a lovely way to display flowers, hold silverware, etc.

A gorgeous set of 2 linen tea towels with a stamped bird design.
DSC_0244-001
A set of darling bird themed coasters.
DSC_0244-002
This adorable picture frame chalkboard with flower embellishment in the corner.
Of course, the chalk is included!

At an over $40 value, we think this is one fantastic prize!!

Would you like to know how you can enter to win it?

Well, we are making this super easy for you today folks!

Just head on over right now and read our Guest Post over at Glynnis Whitwer’s blog and come back over here to leave us a comment letting us know you did!

That’s it! Easy peasy, right?

Now, what are you waiting for?
Get yourself on over there and come back here to enter to win!

P.S.
We just wanted to add that while we are so grateful to be homemakers, we truly believe that in any season of life, whether you are a stay-at-home mom with young children or you work outside of the home.
Whether you are employed part-time, full-time or retired.
The desire to be a “maker” of a “home” is something that resonates with all of us as women!
And it can be expressed in so many different ways.
We just hope you all feel encouraged to have your homes be a refuge for yourself and your families.
And that perhaps, by creating that haven, you will be moved to extend this hospitality
 beyond your front door!

And, as always, thanks so much for visiting us today at the Fence,

    Good Morning-
I just read about you and your give away. I believe homemakers are in a category that is very under rated. I also am in a category like that-a caregiver. I am a retired educator (32 years as an elementary teacher)and
now am a caregiver for my 98 year young father, who so appreciates
the care and support I give to him. He is still in his home, but with
lots of needs. People ask what I do in my retirement and I say I am a “caregiver” and I do not receive much response. Very, very underated
category in the eyes of the world.Your Picket Fence ideas are great. Thanks!!

Saw your post on Glynnis’ blog. I can’t believe that “homemaker” is not a profession that your college recognizes. It is one of the most rewarding jobs available and if done to God’s glory (as all our jobs should be) is most definitely worthy of a category.

I, too, love getting great deals. My hobby is garage sales and the Helping Hands Home Center in my town. I have passed the “genes” on down and my 20-year old granddaughter went shopping for her college dorm at garage sales and was heard over and over, “Grammy would be so proud of me” and “Look, we’re ‘Grammying'”!

Your story and contribution in Prov 31 was/is refreshing and inspiring. (I enjoy your blog too!). I find myself wishing that I had stayed home (when younger) to care for my children, life is too short to dwell in regret.

Today, I am caring for my elderly mother, working 2 jobs and completing my teaching credential… kinda busy, without Jesus … I don’t know where I’d be.
    Thank you! Kate

Kate, I (Heather) also worked when my oldest child was a toddler…and I have regrets as well; but I, like you, am choosing to not dwell on the regret and am so thankful that God has allowed me for the last 12 years to be home with my children and to homeschool them. I have experienced both sides of the coin, working mom and stay at home mom, and can appreciate the trials and triumphs of both. What you are doing for your mom is a beautiful thing and so honoring of the Lord! Your children are watching how you care for your parent, and will model the same someday! God bless you as you shoulder that responsibility. Thank you for stopping by.

I found you through the post on Glynnis’ blog. Thank you for the thrifty ideas, which is what I really need. I don’t shop much (very little extra money for such things, but when I do it has to be the second-hand stores). I sympathize with the “homemaker” story. I have never been able to be a full-time homemaker due to financial needs, but it has always been my desire. When I was a 4.0 GPA senior in high school (1982, I wrote my senior research paper about the importance of stay-at-home moms. The teacher had a hard time with my topic choice, to say the least! She tried to talk me out of it, but at least she did permit and graded it without bias.

Just read your guest post at Glynnis’ blog and I really enjoyed it.
Still smiling about the response Vanessa got about being a homemaker. Just recently, my husband and I had to go buy a new car because our old one just gave up on us and when the salesman asked me what I did for a living I told him I was a retired educator and now working as a domestic engineer. He said, “Oh, nice!” LOL I think he is still trying to figure out what kind of job that is and why I am working as an engineer but I had no income! LOL
Well, from one “domestic engineer” to another, I think you girls are doing a fabulous job with your homes and families. By the way, I love the coffee station.Thank you for a chance to enter the giveaway!

Thanks for the reminder to keep God even in our decorating. All too often we don’t consider Him in “the small things” when that’s where it should really start. Of course, I love the reference to thrifting, I always consider it an extra blessing when He supplies by giving us bargains (tee hee)

Enjoyed your post over on Glynnis’ blog this mornig. I just wandered around a thrift store in my neighborhood over the weekend and saw lots of neat things to fill some boring spots in my current decor. Love the candle holders on the dining room table. Pillars seem so much more “now” than the tapers that I’ve had there for years. The items in your giveaway would certainly give me a kick-start on some blank surfaces that are crying for attention. Thanks for the easy and inexpensive ideas.

I obviously haven’t had enough coffee, and depend on my auto-correct too much. It should, of course, say morning in that first sentence. I’m thinking that the fact it’s also Monday morning may have something to do with it as well. Hope you all have a blessed week.

I love your decorating ideas from Glynnis’ blog. I also like to use thrift store “finds” and re-purpose them, however, sometimes I don’t find a way to use the “treasures” I find and end up with “extra’s”. Any suggestions for eliminating or letting go of unused “treasures”? Karla M

I enjoyed your reminder that decorating to make the clean, organized house a home is also essential. I’d love to be entered in your giveaway for a chance to kick start a new thrifty decorating style. Personally, I think home making and decorating go hand-in-hand quite naturally with the spiritual journey, and I’m glad you do, too. Love your Nordstrom vs. Ross comment! I’ve always “shopped at the top” to see what it looks like … so I can recognize it here “at the bottom” … long before the word “knockoff” was common. 🙂

Hi Jennifer!! I just had to comment and let you know that I just so fully appreciate that struggle to feel like we are constantly having to keep all of the balls in the air at the same time. Daily I battle that feeling of inadequacy and not quite giving 100% to every area of my life. Maybe that is because it is just plain impossible!! But, as we look to Him to supply us with what we need when we need it, we might just find freedom to let a ball drop now and then, you know? And maybe in that process we will discover that “His grace” truly “is sufficient”. I pray that today you will hear His voice speaking truth to you about the wonderful woman you are and that the voice of doubt and lies would be silenced!
Blessings to you and thank you so much for coming by today. 🙂

I absolutely got a good chuckle over your comment about the silence at the other end of the phone when talking about being a homemaker. I was one (and enjoyed it immensely) for about 14 years before going back to work. When I would go to my husband’s get togethers for work, that is what I experienced. It was very disheartening, to say the least. I still do nt regret it at all being home with my children. And, I love to decorate my house with new ideas! I just love your pages!!! Sandy

Hi Vanessa and Heather, I was so happy to see you hold onto the title homemaker, a very important role..to create a lovely and beautiful nest for all those who live there or come to visit or stay.. the home is our refuge and retreat from the world. I found your bird nests deco ideas intriguing.. I have just rearranged my mantle with some branches in a vase and added a stack of books on God and beauty along with 2 iron white birds I found at a thrift shop.. and funny thing I was thinking that I wished I had a real twigs birds nest to set there..my 2 bird houses on my deck or in use right now, bustling with baby birds and busy parents bringing in the food. I did watch with delight as they brought in all sortsof materials for their nests.. perhaps I can make my own.. did you? I look forward to reading more of your blogs as your decorating ideas seem to mesh with my spirit of bringing the seasons of nature and beauty of God into my home and reminding me of the rhythm and presence of God in all things..
peace blessings and continues creative spirit..

I enjoyed your guest post on Glynnis Whitwer’s blog. The coffee station is my favorite idea. My mom and I love going to yard and garage sales and picking up old things to turn in to new decorations. She even copied an FTD ad’s vase by buying a plain old vase and painting it green and putting daisies on the sides. A $60 FTD vase, made even better because she made it with love, for $3!

    God bless you!

Just read your post at Glynnis Whitwer blog.

Homemakers must be highly honored. They raise future geniuses and heroes!
I was reading a book called Straight Talk to Men and he pointed out how women should be valued.
While some people think homemaking is the least thing a woman can prove her value, but sending women to die for the country as soldier is a good idea?

I went over to Glynnis Whitwer’s blog and read your guest post. I just want to say that I am a homemaker (at the request of my sweet husband) and I am PROUD to be able to say that. I love being able to stay home and take care of the house and kids, and have meals ready for him when he gets home. I’m lucky to be with someone who has the same old-fashioned ideas as I do. 🙂

And I LOVE the coffee station idea. We are big coffee drinkers. Like…4 or 5 pots a day coffee drinkers. I mostly drink it black, but when I am feeling ‘fancy’ ….lmao..I love to use sugar cubes in a cute dish and flavors creamers and whatnot. And how impressed would company be with a cute assortment of things to choose from instead of plunking down a gallon of milk and a sugar jar? Haha! I’m definitely going to put one of these together….thanks for the great idea! 🙂

I was sad to hear that “homemaker” is not a recognized occupation, especially since I’ve been doing it for 30 years! Believe me, ladies, you will never regret it. Our 15 year old daughter went home to be with the Lord almost 12 years ago. When I was holding her in that hospital bed one of my first thoughts was “Thank You, Lord, for allowing me to be at home with her.” Now I have those precious memories until we are reunited in Heaven.
On a happier note, I love that burlap basket! The towels and coasters are divine. I’ll chime in with the others in saying the coffee/tea station is a great idea.

Y’all have inspired me on this lovely spring day ~ I just read your guest post on Glynnis’ blog and enjoyed checking out your blog too As a homemaker myself, I am greatful to be blessed to serve my Lord and family by creating a cozy, safe and most importantly, a Godly home. I also understand the frustration we stay at home mom’s feel from time to time when those who don’t can make comments that can leave our mouth’s having open, or us refraining from rolling out eyes. Our 28th wedding anniversary is this week, our five children range in age from 13 to 25 and my husband serves in the Air Force. I once had a new family doctor say that she felt sorry for my husband, with me having all those children and not even working to help support them…Okey dokey, I guess she missed the class on it taking the husband and wife to make the little one….also, she didn’t know our income or budget. I also have friend who works outside the home and always says “when you are bored call me” lol ~ I keep telling her if I wait until then she will likely never hear from me again. For me, it’s been a pleasure{well, most of the time}to cook, clean and manage my home and train my children to do the same. Also, one of my favorite places to get free items for decorating my home is….in my home….I just ‘shop’ in a different room and reuse items or funiture in a different way.

I always look in my Alumni magazine to see what people who graduated with the same degree as me are now doing. But, it never dawned on me that no one was ever listed as a Homemaker! I would have been taken aback by the reaction to “homemaker”, too. Housewife, now that’s been taboo — you’re not your house’s wife. But now that I think of it, domestic engineer was “the” term for a while; I was home, making $0, got a pre-approved gold ultima American Express offer (then their highest card), wrote what I just did above, just to mess with “pre-approved” and they sent me a no-limit card! Talk about incredulous! I didn’t even want it, it was a goof! Wonder what the reaction would have been to blogger?

I read your guest post yesterday on Glynnis Whitwer’s blog. I loved it. Love simple decorating ideas that are budget friendly. I am a homemaker with 6 children and used to love to decorate. Have gotten busy and budget has shrunk substantially over the years and I kind of fell into a place where I thought decorating was either too self indulgent or just not budget friendly. I have been realizing what a difference little touches can make in making a cozy, restful, peaceful place for your family to come home to at the end of a crazy day and am realizing it is not at all an impractical thing to do but a wonderful thing that honors my family. Excited to look for ideas on your site.

    Heather and Vanessa,
I read your post on Glynnis’ Spring Cleaning Series and truly love the way you guys are embracing being homemakers and doing it for the glory of God! I know I need help in this area – to do everything for the Lord and without complaining – especially when the laundry is piled to the ceiling!
Thank you for the great decorating tips – love them, and can’t wait to come back to this blog for more great ideas.

I have been receiving P31 email devotionals for a long time. Through them I started Glynnis Whitwer’s “Clutter-free” study and now through Glynnis I’ve found you! At The Picket Fence reminded me of life with children at home. My children are all adults now (at least chronologically! Lol!) Now I have two grandchildren; Benjamin 11 months and Izabella 3 months old…Izabella is staying with us right now and we are soaking up every minute with that precious gift from God! Reading about you, Heather and Vanessa, is refreshing and encouraging. My sister and I also enjoy a very close relationship and are blessed to live in the same area. I am the oldest by almost 10 years…I’m fond of saying that she’s 12, but with 4 kids of her own it isn’t working anymore! We share a love for the Lord and together we minister to the youth and women in our church and community. We also like to hit thrift shops for home decorating and any other kind of bargain we’re able to find! We believe in living simply; growing our own food when possible and we are both avid hunters. My sister even shot a bear before her husband got one! It is a great feeling to be able to supply your own meat, veggies and fruit…recognizing them as gifts from the Lord! Thank you again for your website and sharing your life with us, your readers. Winning the “contest” would be great, but I figure I already won by finding these great sites – I had to check out Eclectically Vintage, Sweet Country Life, The Space in Between and a few other sites! There’s a whole world of blogging out there I didn’t know existed! So cool! Thanks! God bless you in your ministry!

I loved your post that was part of Glynnis Whitwer’s Spring Cleaning Series. What resonated with me most however was the silence you got when you shared your occupation was “homemaker”. As a working Mom, I treasure SO much the far too few moments I have just to focus on being a homemaker. I am so glad to learn of your site and look forward to referencing it during some of those times. Thanks for what you do and for continuing to show the value of homemaking!

Was reading your guest post in Glynnis’ email and remembered how my Blessing to stay at home was met with incredulous comments of “I would never be able to stay at home with my kids!” In this crazy upside down world where we are growing adults by raising our children up- i personally think the time investment is sound and needed. Anyway, am SO LOVING THE BIRD THEME! Ever since my Oma passed away, birds remind me of her and it would be awesome to win such a special prize. Thanks so much for all your tips in your article- you gave me some new ideas!

I found out about your blog from Glynnis Whitwer’s blog. I added you to my reader! I was a stay at home mom when my kids were little, but I felt that I wasn’t “doing enough” for some dumb reason and decided to go to night school for secretarial. I worked all through my kids growing up and wish everyday that I could have a “do-over”. I do not work now and spend my days watching my grandson and granddaughter. I know I can’t go back, but I am doing my best to be there for my grandkids while my son and daughter-in-law work. I hope someday my son gets a good enough job so that my daughter-in-law can stay home and be the mom that I know she desires to be. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

Happy Friday!! I’m working on a blog post to sha Happy Friday!! I’m working on a blog post to share all of the details of our family room shelving makeover but I’m super impatient and just had to give you all a sneak peek!! We are SO happy with how they turned out and it finally looks like I’ve always envisioned. Our quick fix years ago (scroll to see the before photo) never felt quite right but now? Soooo much better!! 🙌🏻 Big shoutout to our amazingly talented friend Matt @redemptive_woodworx for bringing our vision to life and doing such impeccable work.

I hope you all have a great start to the 4th of July weekend and make sure to check my stories later for Friday Funnies!
The month of June is coming to a close and it has The month of June is coming to a close and it has been JAM packed! The highlight by far though was my son's graduation from high school. When I started blogging, he was only 6 years old and some of you have been apart of my community here for that entire time. Now, he's 19 and there is a reason parents are told not to blink because the years truly do go faster than I ever could have imagined. He has become such an incredible young man we are so excited to see how God is going to unfold the next chapter of his life. We celebrated with parties galore (SO many open houses to attend!) and made memories we'll forever cherish. My mama heart was filled to bursting with the joy of it all! Now we're taking some time to just enjoy these warm, summer days making even more memories because, when you’re at this stage of parenting, you know all too well how much you need to grasp every opportunity to spend time together.

I hope your summer is off to a great start too dear friends! 🪴

Happy first day of summer dear friends!! I can’t believe it’s been so long since I posted something new here but life has been crazy. I’ll have some new photos of house projects and life events to share with you soon but, got now, I’m just going to enjoy this gorgeous first day of summer after our ridiculously long, wet spring. ☀️

This is one of my most favorite projects from my b This is one of my most favorite projects from my book Life in Season!

Because, if heaven has a fragrance, I’m fairly certain it smells like lilacs.

I think that somewhere along the way the verse in the Bible that said, ‘heaven will smell like lilacs’ just got lost in translation. But it HAD to have been in there at some point, right?

When I bury my head in the blossoms (which I absolutely MUST do every single time I walk past them), I immediately feel a stirring in my soul.

It seems like I wait forever for my lilac tree to bloom. Every year I anxiously watch as the buds begin to form on the branches and then when the blossoms finally burst forth I begin that agonizing process of deciding the absolute perfect moment to snip them and bring them inside.

And then, after all of that waiting and watching it’s just over…done. Because, unlike heaven, lilacs don’t last for an eternity. So, making my own lilac room spray seemed like the perfect way to enjoy their fragrance long after the blossoms have faded.

Here’s how to make it! Ingredients: Water, Vodka, Lilac fragrance oil. Directions: Fill spray bottle with 50/50 ratio of water to vodka. Add 12 drops of lilac oil. Give it a shake, spray and if the scent isn’t strong enough, simply add a few more drops of lilac oil.

Once you’ve made this lilac scented room spray you will be very tempted to spray it in every room in your house. And someone may want to use it in the bathroom to cover up other less…ummmm….pleasing aromas.

But, do not, I repeat do NOT, let them.

You’ve captured the fragrance of heaven in a bottle and you wouldn’t want to go and tarnish it now would you? 😉
We had two back to back days of sunshine (the most We had two back to back days of sunshine (the most we’ve had in a LONG time) and now we are back to pouring rain. This has officially confirmed what I’ve know to be true for awhile now.

I’m a MUCH better version of myself when the sun is shining! 🤪 So I’ll just be over here today plotting and planning how my husband and I can be snowbirds someday when the kids are out of the house.

If you could spend your winters (and apparently most of spring too!) in any part of the country, where would it be?
Happy weekend sweet friends!! We’ve had a LOT of Happy weekend sweet friends!! We’ve had a LOT of rain lately (which is saying something when you live in Oregon) and I’ll admit that it’s affecting my moods a bit. I feel like I’m dragging and struggling to find the energy to get stuff done. So don’t mind me if I’m over here looking at photos of my garden in the summertime and finding that it keeps me hopeful about those days to come. They will come, right?! 🤪.

What are your favorite plants that you look forward to seeing in the summer?
We’re going to be giving our laundry room a make We’re going to be giving our laundry room a makeover soon. It’s LONG overdue! In fact, the folks from the counter company were just here taking measurements. While we have made some simple, inexpensive updates over the years, it still has many of the original elements from when the house was built in 1992.

Two of our bathrooms are also in need of major makeovers. And we’ve saved up enough money over the years to tackle those projects. But, for the most part, we made the decision to use the bulk of that money in another way. While we knew that it was financially wise to invest in our house, we also knew that the greatest investment we could make was in our children.

I’ll admit, there are times where I see other people doing massive overhauls of their entire home in a matter of months and I feel a prick of envy. But, we decided that if our choice was between waiting a bit longer to enjoy a renovated bathroom or going on adventures as a family, we would choose adventures every time. And we don’t regret that decision for a single second. It’s not that we haven’t tackled home projects (we’ve done a lot!). It’s just that it’s been a slow and steady process.

Most recently, we let our son pick where we would travel for spring break since this is his senior year of high school and we are trying to make up for lost time. With so much of life ‘paused’ for two years, we have appreciated these moments more than ever. And, since he’ll be heading to college in the fall, we are very aware of how important it is to spend this time together while we still have a modicum of control over everyone’s schedules.

We have many years left to remodel our home but only so much time left to make memories with our children.

And, while I’m always happy to look around my home and see rooms that are updated and more reflecting of our style, it doesn’t compare to the joy I feel when I look around my home and see the people I love the most who have been shaped by the many adventures we’ve experienced together.
