DIY Mason Jar Dining Caddy and Home Depot Giveaway

*This Giveaway is now closed*

Two giveaways in one week? Why yes!! That’s just how much we love our At the Picket Fence friends!

Do you love to eat outside in the summertime but hate having to go in and out of the house dragging all of the necessary dining essentials with you? This DIY dining caddy with mason jars is the perfect solution!

DIY Mason Jar Dining Caddy with Scotch Blue

We LOVE to have dinner (and lunch and breakfast!) out on our deck all summer long! Here in Oregon we live for these months and I’m determined to make the most of them by enjoying the sunshine as much as possible. But, while I love the relaxed feeling of breaking bread together in the great outdoors, I do not enjoy hauling everything back and forth from the kitchen to the deck. While, on the one hand, I think I get a pretty good workout running in and out of the house, I would much rather spend less time doing that and more time feeling the cool breeze on my face while partaking of one of my hubby’s fabulous grilled creations!
painter's tape, scotchblue painter's tape, tape

This post was brought to you in partnership with The Home Depot and ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape.

I found this old wooden whatchamacallit (What would you call that? A tote?) (Oh, and apparently ‘whatchamacallit’ is an actual word because spell check totally ignored it! Who knew?) and even though it was a little worse for the wear I knew I could give it new life.

wooden_tote_turned_dining_caddy

Now, I have to admit something here. I tend to be more of a “winging it” girl when it comes to paint projects. Oh sure, I use tape when I’m painting rooms but when it comes to crafts I’m usually not overly meticulous. And frankly, it shows. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’m having to go back and do things over and half the time just end up scrapping the whole project. I think it’s like my own weird way of rebelling!

So when I got the chance to test out ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape I decided it was time for my crafting skills to grow-up a bit and not rely on photo editing to cover up my mistakes. 😉

scotch blue tape review
The first thing I did was set up a work space on our deck by laying down the non-slip drop cloth. Let me tell you, this thing DOESN’T SLIP! I will never again buy the horrible thin plastic drop cloths which end up slipping or flying up in the air when even the slightest breeze blows.

Now that I had myself the proper work space, it was time to tackle fixing the wooden whatchamacallit. The bottom was easy to fix by simply hammering back in the nails that had pulled away from the sides. But the crack was another issue. I decided to put the ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape to the test and after applying a thin layer of wood glue I used the tape as a sort of clamp to hold it together while it dried.

using tape as clamp to fix crack I liked the weathered look of the wood but I kind of wanted to brighten it up a bit so I decided to paint the body of the caddy but leave the handle in the original tone. I wrapped the ends of the handle with the ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape with the edge-lock feature.

taped off handle

And obviously I put it to the test right away!

tape protecting from drip

It also came in handy for holding my stencil letters in place.

But no matter how wonderful the tape is it couldn’t keep me from having the “T” not lined up properly and having to repaint it a couple of times. Please tell me I’m not the only one who has trouble getting words stenciled onto things!

tape holding stencil in place

Now, if the whatchamacallit is going to become a dining caddy it has to actually be able to HOLD things inside, right? Enter mason jars! And since I had all of this wonderful tape and some leftover chalkboard paint I decided the jars needed labels. And if tape can stand up to chalkboard paint and come out with beautiful corners like you see below than it is worth it’s weight in gold for sure!

how_to_make_chalkboard_labels_on_mason_jars atthepicketfence.com

I absolutely LOVE how they turned out!

mason_jars_with_chalkboard_labels atthepicketfence.com

And, now, getting ready to enjoy eating outside has become a whole lot easier.

mason_jar_dining_caddy

And frankly, I look much cuter carrying this dining caddy than I did when I was sweating from running back and forth to the kitchen!

dining_caddy_atthepicketfence.com

I mean, that’s what’s really important right?

chalkboard_labels_on_mason_jars atthepicketfence.com

I can’t decide if my favorite part about this dining caddy are the chalkboard labeled mason jars or the fact that it says “Eat” on one side…

stenciled_dining_caddy_with_mason_jars atthepicketfence.com

…and “Drink” on the other!

DIY_dining_caddy_with_mason_jars atthepicketfence.com

Because some of our most favorite moments in the summer are when we are sitting outside on a warm evening with friends, eating really incredible food, sipping really incredible cocktails and listening to the really incredible sound of our kiddos laughing and playing. The sun starts setting, we turn on the lanterns and just sit back and enjoy the moment knowing it will be over all too soon!

But until then, my dining caddy and I say “cheers” to you as you relish these last “lazy days of summer”.

And to really help you celebrate these final days of summer the I’m giving away a $75 Gift Card to The Home Depot

This summer I got into terrariums. I saw the exsorbently priced ones from Twig Terrariums $100 and up for 6inche jars. I looked at their Pinterst page https://pinterest.com/source/twigterrariums.com/ and made my own. I got the jar from HomeGoods for $10 and went onto amazon and purchased Model Train Figurines in HO scale. They are .5″ tall and sell for a couple bucks. How,they charge so much considering I put it together with soil and moss from park for under $20!

Great projects, and as summer winds down, still enough time to get a few done! I like the painting patio furniture tutorial, as I have a set of patio furniture that has been screaming at me to get it painted and brought back to life. I just might tackle this before fall hits…

Here is my favorite, the one I want to do this summer: https://thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com/2012/08/diy-wood-planked-wall.html

Except I want to do it in my laundry room and/or my entry way. And I want to use a gray stain. Plus, I wouldn’t do it all the way to the ceiling. Just as high as I would do a beadboard treatment.

Why do I start decorating before Thanksgiving? Bec Why do I start decorating before Thanksgiving? Because it’s the Saturday after and my house is almost completely ready to start the season! So I’m sitting with my coffee and just soaking it all up knowing that now I can focus on shopping, hosting and preparing our hearts for the start of Advent. The only thing left to do is get our fresh tree for the front room and then the decorating is done.

Starting early is a gift I give to myself and I’m always grateful for it! 🌲

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours dear friends! 🍂
Christmas has arrived in the family room where I k Christmas has arrived in the family room where I keep things simple but festive! We’ll get a fresh tree after Thanksgiving which will go in our front room bay window but this slim faux tree with its colorful ornaments tides us over for now. Which room in your home gets the Christmas treatment first? Or do you just start doing a little at a time in each room? 🎄

I share this recipe every year because it’s JUST I share this recipe every year because it’s JUST.THAT.GOOD!

And I have a confession ...I’d rather have cranberry sauce smothering the turkey on my plate than gravy any day!! And this, this right here? Well it’s the best (and easiest!) cranberry sauce ever!! I eat on crackers and sandwiches and sometimes just by the spoonful. It’s so yummy! And I’m just so very thankful for all of you that I’m going to leave the recipe right here instead of making you go to the blog to get it. I promise you won’t regret having this on your Thanksgiving menu but be warned...you may find yourself up in the middle of the night sneaking some helpings of this deliciousness. Or maybe that’s just me!

Ingredients:
2 pounds fresh or frozen cranberries
2 oranges
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup white wine.

Instructions:
Wash and pick over berries, removing any that are soft. Peel and dice oranges removing any seeds. Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Bring to a full boil. Reduce heat and continue cooking until cranberries pop open and mixture is thickening.
For best flavor, prepare and let stand for several days before using.

How do I want people to feel when they walk throug How do I want people to feel when they walk through my front door? That’s always at the top of my mind when I’m decorating my entry for each season, particularly at Christmastime.

✨I want them to feel like my home is greeting them with a smile.

✨I want them to feel like this is a place where care has been given to details (but not to the point of being too stuffy or too busy or too overwhelming).

✨I want them to feel like there is peace here.

✨I want them to feel like they are welcome…because they are.

My home is a reflection of my heart and my heart is a reflection of the ONE for whom I live and try to honor and praise all of my days, but especially at Christmas.

How do you want people to feel when they come into your home?

This is not a criticism of those who are sharing t This is not a criticism of those who are sharing their great new Christmas finds but rather an encouragement to those of you who are feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all and trying to resist the temptation to purchase more items than you really need.

Several years ago I felt a conviction in my heart about how much time and money I was spending on trying to create a new look every Christmas. I was not being a good steward of my resources and I was far too easily swayed by the peer pressure in this area. And a funny thing happened when I smashed this idol that had taken up residence in my heart. I suddenly found renewed joy in decorating for the season. By keeping things simple and maybe only buying something like a new spool of velvet ribbon, I actually realized that I could be far more creative reusing and repurposing what I already had.

In the coming weeks your news feeds will be filled with temptations for MORE. Maybe, this year, you too can find the joy in LESS. 🌲

Do you have a hot cocoa or coffee station at your house? Here’s a look back at years past if you’re needing a little bit of inspiration!

I don’t know exactly why this is, but my home se I don’t know exactly why this is, but my home seems to rise up to welcome Autumn like no other season. Maybe it’s the warm, subtle tones. Maybe it’s the way the sunlight streams in at a different angle this time of the year. Maybe it’s the leaves doing their fall dance. Maybe it’s just that this is when everything begins to feel a bit more cozy.

Whatever it is, I’m savoring every last bit of it as we enjoy the most beautiful final days of Autumn here in the Willamette Valley. The rain is forecasted to return later this week and I’m planning to move onto twinkling lights and evergreen boughs but, for now, here’s a little last look at Autumn in my home. 🍂

When will you begin to transition your home from Autumn to Winter?
I laughed out loud yesterday as I was listening to I laughed out loud yesterday as I was listening to a podcast. Not because something funny was said but because the timing of the statement was perfect. The guest on that episode was offering encouragement to pastors about how to stay true to God’s Word during these tumultous times and then encouraged the rest of us to be thinking of how we can show love and care towards our church pastors. He said, “maybe even have them over for dinner!” And that’s when I laughed out loud because we were hosting our pastor and his family for dinner THAT VERY NIGHT!

After the heartache of leaving the church we had attended for over 20 years, it was such a joy to have this incredible shepherd and his wife and daughter in our home. We’ve witnessed them tirelessly, sacrifically giving so much to their congregation and the community at large and we loved that we were able to give them the opportunity to receive. They are some of the warmest, kindest people you’ll ever meet. The meal was simple (roasted chicken and vegetables recipe from @jocooks), the dessert was made the night before and it really required so little from us in terms of effort.

Friends, take care of those who are in the trenches of preaching/teaching right now as it is not an easy time to be in that role. Bake them a loaf of bread, drop off a gift card to a restaurant or maybe even have them over for dinner (but don’t use that time to complain or critique 😉).

I truly hope that it blessed them as much as it did us! 🍂
Simple, soft, slow. That’s been my mantra for th Simple, soft, slow. That’s been my mantra for the past few years when it comes to decorating for Christmas. And as I begin to think about how I’ll welcome the new season to my home this year, it doesn’t fill me with the same anxiety as it used to. If I stick to my mantra then I know I won’t get overwhelmed and I’ll actually be able to just enjoy the true beauty and meaning of it all.

Here’s some inspiration from years past in my home! 🌲
