A few weeks ago I mentioned that I had the honor of joining The Home Depot and The Home Depot Foundation for another Celebration of Service Project! This time I was able to bring along my own, and personally favorite, veteran…my husband!
As the daughter in law, wife and now MOM, of a veteran, those who serve our military are near and dear to my heart and to have a chance to give just a little back to someone who has given so much, is a true joy!
We met up with our team of Home Depot employees, who volunteer their time in support of the Celebration of Service Campaign. This campaign is in it’s and
It was a crisp Veteran’s Day morning, at Mr. Glover’s home in Atlanta, and we were ready to get started! A veteran, who served our country in Vietnam, Mr. Glover, and his wife, were so welcoming and excited for us to get started! Of course it’s not a true Celebration of Service without a #serviceselfie!
Lee and I worked with these great guys as we repainted the trim and walls in the Glover’s dining room. I put my “trimming” skills to good use, repainting all of the wood with a fresh new coat.
We had such a great time visiting with one another and hearing Mr. Glover share his stories from his soldiering days. We definitely felt like part of The Home Depot family by the time the day was done.
After cleaning up, I had a chance to present Mr. Glover with the DIY Military Shadowbox I built for him. He was so excited to have a place to proudly display his uniform and other service memorabilia from his days in the US Army!
After leaving our Celebration of Service project site, we headed over to the Shepherd Center in downtown Atlanta, where I was able to present the DIY Handprint American Flag Art, I had created, to the PTSD and Brain Injury wing. This is a special unit designated for the recovery of our soldiers, who have been injured during service to their country.
Our friends from the DIY Worksop I helped with and where those sweet handprints came from, was there as well. We not only presented the flag, but hundreds of letters written to our soldiers from our littlest “home depot-ers!.”
The opportunity to serve our greatest heroes in so many different ways has been such an amazing experience and I have one more special holiday surprise coming up soon…so stay tuned!
See you back here soon…at the picket fence!
Thank you for sharing such a special opportunity to give back. You’ve inspired me!
This is awesome, Heather! My son just became a Naval officer, so I’m particularly grateful for this kind of kindness toward our beloved veterans. Thank you!
This is so wonderful…such an enormous great cause….loved both the shadow box and that fabulous flag….Bravo Heather….
I just love your heart, Heather! I know this was a special day for you and Lee to be able to be there to give back to this amazing hero!
