Did you know there is a National Pie Day? Did you know it was TOMORROW! A WHOLE day to celebrate the goodness of PIE!
What is it about pie that conjures up images of home and warmth and grandma’s kitchen table?
It’s most likely because pies are just so comforting. Whether classic apple, tart cherry or smooth pumpkin, pies are perfect for any occasion and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Instead of a whole pie, I’ve created heart topped Nutella and Blackberry Hand Pies as a special treat to share with the ones you love.
I can’t think of a better treat to pay homage to Valentine’s Day and National Pie Day than making a pie. Pies are truly as American as well…apple pie!
These sweet little hand pies combine flakey, crisp sugar coated pie crust with creamy Nutella and tart blackberries, a match made in pie heaven!
A perfect treat that fits right in your hand! Show the ones you love how much you care by baking them these Valentine's Day Nutella and Blackberry Hand Pies.
Ingredients
- 1 Package pre-made package refrigerated pie crusts
- 1 standard size container Nutella
- 1 Cup fresh or frozen (thawed) blackberries
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 2 Tablespoons flour
- 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 Egg yolk
- 1 Tablespoon heavy cream
Instructions
- Blackberry mixture:
- Combine blackberries, sugar and flour bringing to a simmer. Slightly crush blackberries with potato masher or fork leaving some still whole. Allow to thicken and then cool.
- Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees
- Roll out 1 pie dough crust until about 1/8th inch thick
- Using a large round cookie cutter or large coffee mug or cup, cut approximately 6 circles out of pie dough
- Place dough circles onto parchment paper covered cookie sheet
- Top each circle in center with a heaping tablespoon of Nutella
- Top Nutella with a heaping tablespoon of cooled blackberry mixture
- Roll out 2nd pie dough crust until about 1/8th inch thick. Cut circles and using small heart shaped cookie cutter cut out hearts in center of each circle.(alternately you can use sharp knife to cut small hearts out)
- Top bottom circles with top circles, pressing edges together. Crimp edges with fork.
- Whisk together yolk and heavy cream. Brush egg mixture on each pie. Sprinkle with sugar.
- Bake for 20 minutes on middle rack. Allow to cool before serving.
