Plum Tart with Puff Pastry

Wouldn’t you agree that there isn’t much in life that can’t be tied back to Anne of Green Gables? This must be why I couldn’t make a plum puff pastry tart without thinking about Anne Shirley and her desperate longing for a dress with puffed sleeves.

Anne clasped her hands and looked at the dresses. “I did hope there would be a white one with puffed sleeves,” she whispered disconsolately.  “I prayed for one, but I didn’t much expect it on that account.  I didn’t suppose God would have time to bother about a little orphan girl’s dress.  I knew I’d just have to depend on Marilla for it.  Well, fortunately I can imagine that one of them is of snow-white muslin with lovely lace frills and three-puffed sleeves.”Anne of Green Gables

Just imagine, after years of hand-me-downs and cast-offs finally having new dresses made just for you only to discover that they were the other ‘p’ word…practical. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? In that moment where practicality seems to win but we are left longing for the dream?

Fortunately for Anne, her vivid imagination saved her time and time again from being overwhelmed by disappointment.

And fortunately for me, this plum puff pastry tart managed to be both practical, puffy and well…perfect.

Oh, and it used plums. So we’ve managed to incorporate four p’s into one amazing recipe.

I think even Anne Shirley would be impressed by that, don’t you? 😉

Frankly, it didn’t take too much of a stretch of the imagination to know that when you combine plums and puff pastry you are going to end up with magical results.

Kind of like what happened when Anne finally did get that store-bought dress with the puffed sleeves.

Do you remember that scene in the movie? I cry every.single.time I see it. Matthew has just worked up the courage to buy a dress (along with 20 pounds of brown sugar!) for this little girl whose come into his life and forever changed him.

Anne discovers the dress, quickly puts it on and races out to the barn where Matthew is working.

“Puffed sleeves”, says Matthew.

“The puffiest”, says Anne.

And she goes forward to give him a hug but he says he doesn’t want to get her dress dirty but then she just rushes over to him and squeezes him tight and then I burst into tears.

Because it wasn’t just about those puffed sleeves, was it?

It was about a dream coming true. A simple dream, yes. But one that represented so much.

It meant that if that dream could come true then maybe, just maybe, others might too.

Dreams of a home and a place to belong. Of friendships and perhaps even love.

And we’ve all had those ‘puffed sleeves’ moments haven’t we? When something that seems so simple, so silly and so impractical means so much.  But when those simple, silly, impractical dreams come true suddenly we see that the door has opened, even if just a crack, for us to dream bigger dreams. Dreams that go far beyond puffed sleeves.

“Anne sat long at her window that night companioned by a glad content. The wind purred softly in the cherry boughs, and the mint breaths came up to her. The stars twinkled over the pointed firs in the hollow and Diana’s light gleamed through the old gap. Anne’s horizons had closed in since the night she had sat there after coming home from Queen’s; but if the path set before her feet was to be narrow she knew that flowers of quiet happiness would bloom along it. The joy of sincere work and worthy aspiration and congenial friendship were to be hers; nothing could rob her of her birthright of fancy or her ideal world of dreams. And there was always the bend in the road!”

I’m looking ahead to my ‘bend in the road’…are you? 🙂

This…this right here…is my heart’s desire. H This…this right here…is my heart’s desire. Happy Friday dear friends. Let’s make this the goal for our homes. 🍃

“I believe that a godly home is a foretaste of heaven. Our homes, imperfect as they are, must be a haven from the chaos outside. They should be a reflection of our eternal home, where troubled souls find peace, weary hearts find rest, hungry bodies find refreshment, lonely pilgrims find communion, and wounded spirits find compassion.” (Jani Ortlund)
It’s time for another #tiptuesday and this week It’s time for another #tiptuesday and this week I’m showing how easy it is to decorate an entry table for spring in under five minutes! The formula is SO simple…

1. A lamp is your staple element and provides height.
2. Add a stack of books.
3. Bring in depth with a small framed seasonal print.
4. Add a small tray
5. Place seasonal accessories and a candle on that tray especially if you have cute brass bunnies!
6. Put a vase or urn on top of the books and add fresh or silk spring flowers.

And that’s all there is to it! Happy Spring dear friends! 🌸
Happy Friday! I’m oh so thankful for beautiful s Happy Friday! I’m oh so thankful for beautiful sunshine especially when our family has been hit by illness this week. Everyone is on the upswing, thankfully, and I’m hoping we’ll fell well enough to get outside and soak up some much needed natural vitamin D. After so many days of wet, gloomy weather this is like balm for my soul! 🍃 What’s the weather like where you are?

In other news, the hot cocoa station is finally gone and in it's place is a fresh new look that was kicked off by finding a beautiful, rustic vase at @homegoods. It feels like my home is rising up to welcome Spring and I'm so ready for sunshine and longer days. 🍃

Don’t forget to check out my stories tonight for Friday funnies! I love hearing from so many of you who say it’s your favorite way to wrap up your week. ☺️

Happy March first dear friends! 🍃
Our first ‘laundry room’ wasn’t actually a r Our first ‘laundry room’ wasn’t actually a room at all. The 20+ year old washer and dryer we inherited after we got married was hooked up in the garage of our small townhouse. Our second ‘laundry room’ was an improvement because it was actually INSIDE the house but it was in our family room behind bifold doors.

So when we moved into this home 15 years ago I literally jumped up and down when I saw this real laundry room. Never mind that it had dated counters and an old stained sink. It was an actual room!

We made minor updates to it over the years but other, more visible, spaces took priority so we spent our resources on beautifying those.

But, last summer, we finally had new counters installed and made a few more updates that have completely transformed this room.

Now, it’s almost a joy to do the laundry…almost! 😉

Ronald Reagan famously said that “all great chan Ronald Reagan famously said that “all great change in America begins at the dinner table.” I think this is true for everyone worldwide. You simply can’t put a value on the importance of gathering together for a meal with those you love. But, sometimes, we can struggle with getting the conversations flowing. So for this #tiptuesday, I’m sharing some tools we’ve used in our home. 🍃
There is just something about the combination of l There is just something about the combination of lemon and honey. It’s rustic yet fancy, sweet yet tart, spring-like yet comforting on a cold winters day.

And that’s why this is hands down one of my favorite recipes! I decided to take a basic tea cake and turn it into a loaf of sweet, tart, simple yet fancy goodness and the only thing bad about it was how quickly it disappeared!
