We Have Exciting News and a Giveaway!

We’ve decided that having a book published feels a lot like winning the lottery. Not that we’ve ever actually won the lottery (probably because we don’t buy tickets for it!), but we would imagine that the feelings we felt when we found out a publisher was actually offering us the opportunity to write a book wouldn’t be all that different from the feelings of a lottery winner. Lots of jumping up and down, cheering, tears and celebrating.

Now, let us be clear, this isn’t because it in any way relates to money. Because, frankly, authors aren’t raking it in quite like people might think they are. Especially those of us who are babies in the industry. But that’s not why we do what we do.

What we really mean is that, just like winning the lottery, the odds of having a book published the traditional way aren’t great. So, as God continued to open the doors for us and as we watched all of the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, we truly could not believe it was really happening. Because, you see, our desire was never just to check a box. Write a book? Check! Done and done. No, our desire was to provide what so many of you expressed a desire for over the years. A way to hold our blog in your hands. To pull it out over and over, pour over the pages, read stories that encouraged you on your faith journey and get simple ideas for your home. And more than anything, we desired to honor God.

Life in Season was released last fall and we could not be more amazed and humbled by how it has been received. Truly.

And, even if we never published another book, we would know that we had put together something that so perfectly reflected who we are, what we believe, and how we want to inspire.

But, guess what?????

We ARE publishing another book!!!!

We could not be more thrilled to announce that we are currently writing a second book and it is tentatively slated to be released in the fall of 2018. Yes, that seems like a long way off, but there is sooooooo much that goes into getting it ready for production not the least of which is the actual writing.

So, what will this book be about, you ask? Well, we don’t have an official title yet, but just imagine an entire book dedicated to the topic of peace.

Peace in Your Heart

Peace in Your Health

Peace in Your Home

Because, we all long for peace, right? But peace is something that we believe has to be invited into your life. And our prayer is that this book will provide you with encouragement, insights and tips for how to live a life filled with peace.

We are feverishly writing and amazed again and again at how the words seem to come not really from us but from the Lord. But if you happen to run into us somewhere and we have a dazed look in our eyes just know that it’s from staring at a computer screen for hours on end. 😉

Now, in honor of this exciting news, we thought it would be fun to celebrate with a giveaway!

We’re giving away two, count ’em TWO signed (by both of us!) copies of ‘Life in Season’.

Here’s how to enter to win:

Leave us a comment telling us what you are most looking forward to about our new book on the subject of Peace.

That’s it! Easy peasy right?

We truly can’t thank you all enough for being apart of this journey with you. In a million years, we never would have thought that a desire to create a little online community for women to share, care and inspire would turn into the opportunity to write even one book let alone TWO books. And none of this would be possible without all of you!

Much love to you sweet friends and, as always, thank you for meeting us here at the fence,

As much as I strive for peace on a daily basis there are times it feels illusive. It would be nice to have a book like yours to have available at times like this. Sometimes a word, an idea, or a phrase written by someone else can turn things around on a bad day. Enjoy this creative opportunity and I look forward to the finished product.

Dear Heather and Vanessa – I bought your book even before it was published knowing all too fully well how perfect a book it would be and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!! Now I would absolutely *love* to win this giveaway because I know two perfect angels who I would gift these books to.

As far as a book about peace? AWESOME. You know I will be on the waiting list for it, too.

Thank you for this most generous giveaway – so that we may always pass the generosity on to deserving angels out there who need a lift as well. Good luck in your next authoring endeavor. Can’t WAIT!

    God’s blessings to you.

Congratulations, ladies! I am so VERY excited for you. Although there is much work ahead… how wonderful to eventually be able to HOLD your work in your hands! Regarding peace… it certainly is timely and there is one area that enters lots of conversations with friends and that is peace in relationships. This seems to be the enemy’s playground. So many people I know are desiring peace between friends and family and co-workers.
I’ll look forward to your new book. May God’s favor rest upon you as you seek HIS heart for the words that will fill the pages of your new edition. xo

I would love to receive this book for my mom. She and my father have moved into assisted living, not by choice, but by health circumstances. The greatest love my mom has is decorating her home and she is having such difficulty with the fact that her home now consists of 550 square feet. She is trying so hard to adjust but her joy is gone. She and I have been praying and talking but I think your book would be something she could go to seeking her peace. I appreciate the opportunity to win it for her and for me.

Not only are all our hearts yearning for peace on earth in today’s world, but also I/we yearning for an inner peace…A way for our souls to live without pressures, without regrets, without letting bothersome thoughts take space in our hearts and minds. – Sounds to me like a book I NEED and would love. I know it comes in many forms and I think this book will be a start in the right direction. I hope I get the chance to read it, as I too fight my own demons. It’s been hard for me to find peace with the passing of my mom. She and I were both young when she went home to the Lord. Maybe it will help me find the peace I’ve been praying for.

I eat on crackers and sandwiches and sometimes just by the spoonful. It’s so yummy! And I’m just so very thankful for all of you that I’m going to leave the recipe right here instead of making you go to the blog to get it. I promise you won’t regret having this on your Thanksgiving menu but be warned...you may find yourself up in the middle of the night sneaking some helpings of this deliciousness. Or maybe that’s just me!

Ingredients:
2 pounds fresh or frozen cranberries
2 oranges
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup white wine.

Instructions:
Wash and pick over berries, removing any that are soft. Peel and dice oranges removing any seeds. Combine all ingredients in a large pot. Bring to a full boil. Reduce heat and continue cooking until cranberries pop open and mixture is thickening.
For best flavor, prepare and let stand for several days before using.

The great debate on social media over whether or not Christmas decorations should appear before Thanksgiving is one I just let roll on past me. Because I am so unbelievably thankful for this life, my family, my friends, this country, this home and most of all my Savior.

Having my home all ready to welcome the next sacred season doesn’t take away one iota from my ability to express gratitude on the official day set aside each year where we do that collectively.

And when the last slice of turkey has been eaten and all of the leftovers put away, I’ll be over here ready to be fully present in the month of December and soak up every bit of it! 🦃🎄

For one thing, Instagram wouldn’t throttle my account with its algorithms that are skewed to diminish voices like mine. It would be much easier to be so tethered to this app that I change everything I post to fit into its preferred framework. I would be asked to be part of influencer groups and activities like I was years ago. But I’m not that person anymore. Yes, the core of this community will always be an emphasis on homemaking which will include decorating and recipes but I can’t separate that from the core of who I am as a follower of Jesus Christ.

It would be so much easier for me to just show you the latest Amazon products I’ve bought and tell you to “comment” to get the links. But I’m not called to take the easy path. Matthew 7:13-14 says, “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.”

I truly believe that so many have been lulled into thinking that the narrow gate wasn’t really all that narrow. But, it’s never been more obvious that it really is. And every day I seek to stay on that very narrow way. More than ever before, I believe that our world needs to know that there is objective truth and a solid foundation to stand upon as we navigate our lives. My role as a homemaker is predicated on that foundation and everything else flows out of it. Talking about these things isn’t going to get me lots of views here.

But I live for an audience of ONE.
The first time we hosted my in-laws for a meal was The first time we hosted my in-laws for a meal was in 1998. I was a new bride and eager to impress them. It did not go well. Let’s just say there was a bit of a garbage disposal mishap.

It’s been over 25 years since then and I’ve learned so much about what really matters when it comes to hosting and caring for my family well during the holiday season.

The peace we long for in our home begins with our hearts. If you want your home to feel more peaceful during the upcoming holiday season, I have five things to consider that will make that not only possible but predictable.

Here, in my little corner of social media, you won Here, in my little corner of social media, you won’t find a lot of unboxing of brand new items for Christmas.

What I’m unboxing are the decorations in the attic that I’ve had for years and figuring out how to give them a fresh look. I added new lights to an old pre-lit tree that no longer worked because I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of it. I’m putting out a different set of mugs at the hot cocoa station and the advent candles are arranged with greenery from outside.

As our feeds are filled with so.much.stuff, I want to offer you a reprieve. A place where you will find less emphasis on what’s happening in our homes and more on what’s happening in our hearts.

More than ever before, I can see just how much people are needing the hope found in Christ and that will always be the focus here.

So, while you may not see me unpacking a massive, new tree or telling you to “comment for the link”, what you will see is encouragement to turn our hearts to what matters the most and let that reflect in every corner of our homes this season and all year long. 🌲
